IK Multimedia iRig 2 portable guitar audio interface, lightweight audio adapter for iPhone and iPad with instrument input and headphone/amplfier outs

I bought this to start using virtual effects and amp models in my iPhone, mostly with live performance in mind. The iPhone I'm using for this is an older one, an iPhone 6, and that's one reason I chose the iRig2, since it takes advantage of the 6's 3.5mm headphone jack, leaving the lightning port free for other uses. Also, I love the simplicity of this analog unit, and the price is great.I primarily use Tonestack for my virtual effects, and it pops up a warning with the IRig2 about higher risk of feedback with headphone jack interfaces. Because of this, Tonestack automatically turns on feedback protection for this device, and I've had no issues at all. I'm mostly plugging into this with a simple and inexpensive soundhole pickup mounted in my acoustic guitar. I initially worried about latency, but it hasn't been an issue for me - seems fine for my purposes. Sound quality has been great.I really love this little device. It let me repurpose an old iPhone 6 that was just sitting unused in a drawer, and now I have a very economical virtual guitar setup that's working great for my needs.

This little gem is a game changer for guitar practice for me and at only 40 bucks it may the best toy I ever purchased for my guitar playing. Here is why I love it so far.1. I can practice with headphones now and all I have to do is plug in my guitar, headphones, and the iRig2 into my iPhone or iPad.2. Portable and small.3. No batteries needed!4. The free app has several useful practice features allowing me to do away with having several apps open at one time to practice. The free amplitube app has a tuner, can import and play backing tracks, can slow down tracks, can add effects without pedals, can access the iPad's mic, can record my practice sessions, has a metronome and more. One app to rule them all!5. I can also plug into an amp if I don't want to use headphones.6. I don't wake my wife and kid up when I practice and don't annoy them when they are watching TV.7. The sounds quality is excellent for my intended use. No feedback yet and the external gain control is nice too.8. The free app is easy to use. I figured out everything I will use in five minutes.9. Plug and play even for a newbie.10. I get to try more amps and effects than I could ever afford to buy or even want to buy without ever leaving the house. Of course, some of those will cost extra as in app purchases so keep that in mind.11. I practice more now because it is less of a pain to get going.12. I practice any where I want without having to bring an amp. Just my guitar and a few small items in my gig bag.A few observations. For the record, I am using an iPhone and iPad without issue so I can't speak to how it works with Android or others. Seems pretty sturdy. The mic velcro could be useful in the future for live use. Packaging is nice. It is smaller than I thought it would be. The extra cost for in app purchases may annoy some but after reading some complaints, I was pleasantly surprised by what is included. I can't believe it only cost $40 and that it works as advertised. Big surprise. I expected more bugs but I guess this is pretty basic technology. Unless you are playing live for money or you need professional quality recordings, I would skip the HD version and save $60 by getting this one.Extra pedals, drums, and amps cost more. They range individually for as low as $2.99 and as high as $99 for an "everything they sell" bundle. You can download the Amplitube app for free and have a look at all the extras before you even buy the irig2 if you like and then delete the app if you choose later.I should have purchased something like this a long time ago. A must for musicians.Very simple and effective piece of equipmentUsed it to record electronic drums and my monitor sound for my live gig videos

I purchased this to use with Amplitube on the iPad. Aside from minor signal interferences that you can't hear when you play, this thing is awesome! You can add gain to your guitar just using the iRig 2 and adjust your headphone level on it. I get a better tone using this and Amplitube than I do out of my JCM 800 amplifier. It's not built with the best possible materials, but it's not super cheap either. It should hold up if you take care of it. It's really nice that you can play through it to Amplitube and then out into an amp. Great for amps that don't sound the best or for a PA input. Reccomended!

I'm using this with a Mac and an instrument with a pickup. The iRig2 didn't work as expected. However, the manufacturer sent a replacement very quickly—the iRig USB. Works great.

UPDATE: Whelp, no longer works after "every-other-day" usage for the past 3 months. Something has gone bad with the 1/4" jack as the sound is either full of static or fails to make any sound at all. Fun while it lasted, but clearly not a product I could recommend. Warranty requires registration within 15 days of purchase- which is garbage if I can prove my purchase. Ultimately, I'd avoid this product unless you want to gamble on $40.As a beginner, I purchased the iRig to go with my Electric Guitar so I could practice in a park during my lunch break with my iPhone and headphones and the ToneBridge app.Audio through the lightning > 3mm adapter and iRig sounds fine for an analog device- and you'd have to be a fairly serious recording artist to want to move up to the HD iRig. For practice/messing around it's great!The actual build is a bit clunky though, and I assume it's much better suited for an iPad than an iPhone. Unfortunately, the weight of the iRig + 1/4 cable + headphones puts a lot of pressure on the iPhone and it's hard to keep it in place lying down or in a stand. Ideally, the iRig should have a much longer chord that allows you to clip it somewhere more convenient.Unfortunately, I'm not aware of another product at this price that would be better, so it is what it is. Overall very happy with the iRig, as it gives me a very cheap way to create amp/pedal effects at almost zero cost. If you're a serious musician you might not be impressed, but as a beginner it's been a lot of fun exploring sounds I never would have had access to.
