The model for "Dreams of Long Ago", which appeared on the Post on August 13, 1927, was a very unique character named James K. Van Brunt. Rockwell himself said "The day he turned up at my studio was one the luckiest das of my life." Van Brunt claimed the he was a veteran of Antiietam and had battled the Indians under Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. His most outstanding characteristic was his mustache which measured a full eight inches from tip to tip. Rockwell use him in Post illustrations so often that the editors finally complained that he was overdoing it.
