Great introduction to the Saber by a Great Grand Master.
As a Martial Artis for 32 years, I have used and practiced the arts using many available tools as well as many years in the Dojan. The dvd is a great way to introduce yourself to the Saber. GrandMaster Yang is very clear in his explanation, he provide information that if followed an individual with practice will acquire the basic ability to continue to more intense learning of this weapon. Dr. Yang does say that this is a DVD of the basics, but there is lots of information, techniques, and routines both solo and with a partner to become sufficiently adopted to using the saber. I believe if you are interested in this weapon and have not been properly introduced to it, this is the best way to go and seek information that teaches the history, the origin, why safety is important and will give you the pracitce you need to continue on to far more advance training. I will be opening up my first Tai Chi Class and although I will consentrate on the Tai Chi Swoard, this DVD will be a great asset to your instructional library. I recommend this dvd to anyone who is really interested in the Saber. Remember, no training school or dvd will make you become a professional unless you put in the time, but if you do following this dvd, this is an investment well worth the price. Then he breaks down each form into small sections showing each movement in detail with applications for each movement in an easy
Another exvellent DVD from Dr. Yang. What an impressive teacher. He dies a quick refresher of the individual broadsword techniques taught in the fundamental training DVD (also highly recommended) and then teaches 2 broadsword forms, Qi Xing Dao (seven star broadsword) and Bagua Dao. Several students demonstrate each form at slow and regular speeds so you can see the whole form. Then he breaks down each form into small sections showing each movement in detail with applications for each movement in an easy to understand manner. So you can focus on proper body position, position of your hands and your foot work / stances. The applications excellent and really help give the movements more meaning. Highly recommended. Also Dr. Yang explains the historical significance of many of the techniques which I have never seen on similar instructional dvd's or books. His knowledge and the manner he presents it is very impressive and entertaining.

If your going to beat someone with a stick, then this can help you learn how to do right!
So I've been a big follower of Dr.yang since I was young. In fact if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have no interest in martial arts and martial history. If you like to understand weapons and learn (if you have some background in it first, or you're special) the basic under laying formula then this is for you! He walks you through the difference between the southern stick and northern stick. How each tech is applied and how to train it up. As well at the end of the DVD the form that comprises of all the said techs. Study and train hard my friends. And remember we live in a day and age where this knowledge is all around. So stop fapping and start training! Keep in mind this is Southern staff only!

'Faulty' student demonstrations are there for a reason!
Some of the other reviews have criticized this video for showing students doing the techniques -- and not very well. News flash! Perhaps Dr. Yang knows what he's doing! OF COURSE when the students do the techniques, they don't do them quite right. Precisely -- these students are making the common mistakes *I* am likely to make. Immediately after the student demonstrations, Dr. Yang follows up with an explanation of what they aren't doing quite right and how to correct it. And his remarks about WHY there are different length staves, some of the history behind staff fighting, and WHY techniques are done the way they are are also marvelous.

Another top quality DVD by YMAA
Top quality teaching and video . Typical of YMAA. Their stuff is always first rate quality . They explain and show the individual moves of the staff and later show the forms . Always great stuff out of these guys .

Shaolin Staff
Aloha, I have the other YMAA staff DVD too, but this one shows the basics in a slower more comprehensive style, which is better for me. I view this DVD in slow motion and reverse it, to see the different hand techniques and body positions to move the staff. I'm progressing slowly. The DVD shows me the basic techniques, so I can progress at my own speed. I'm using the Tiger Claw Iron Staff, also from Amazon, as my training staff, so I have to go slowly. Take care of yourself.

Wanna learn the basics from a dvd? Start here...
Another very good dvd from Dr.Yang. Plenty of training drills to keep the beginner/intermediate user busy for ages with excellent tutorials for each. Anyone who has viewed one of Dr.Yang's dvd's will be familiar with the presentation and structure of this dvd. Those who have not will be pleasantly suprised by it's quality and easy to use nature. Logical drill progression and easy to skip to chapters. Just make sure you don't put your saber through your TV set! Enjoy!

Good tutorial
This is a good tutorial DVD, showing basic moves and techniques. What could be good to add for 5 starts are slow-motion moves for certain more tricky ones and some kind of practice sequences to learn faster.
