Excellent Resource
I picked up these books to supplement college coursework and Cisco Net Academy studies as I have heard that Wendell Odom is a master at presenting information in a clear, concise manner. Upon perusing the material it appears what I have heard from others is correct; not only is the material accurate and informative, but it is written in a style and manner that is easily understood and fun to read. What I found most helpful are the assessments at the beginning of each chapter. Using these allows me to determine if I can simply touch on chapter highlights, or delve deeper into the material to gain a better understanding or further reinforce topics that I do not fully comprehend. The included test software is also well written and very challenging. I feel very confident that after studying the material and passing the included test software I will succeed on test day.The only problem I have had with this book has to do with its publication date. Cisco has recently updated the exam and exam material. However, Amazon offers multiple versions of the same book with varying ICBN numbers. Despite purchasing what appeared to be the most up-to-date publication, Amazon mistakenly sent an out of date book. This happened twice unfortunately, though Amazon did step up to the plate and rectify the situation appropriately. So be careful when ordering and ensure you receive the most up-to-date publication so that you aren't studying out of date material.

A great resource (that doesn't require a rack full of gear)!
[NOTE: Cisco is introducing its next generation of exams for ICND1 and ICND2. Make sure you select study materials that match the exam you will be taking. If you are taking a newer version of these exams, I strongly recommend you get the updated version of this title when it is released, especially if Wendell Odom remains the primary contributor.]I've been a techie for more than 20 years now, but have only recently started pursuing Cisco certifications. This set was highly recommended by a colleague, and, after using it, I understand why. Each of the two books (one for each of the two Cisco exams that are covered) comes with a small set of simulations, but the real benefit of this set is the full simulator set it includes (above and beyond the disk with each book). With these materials in hand, I was able to pass my ICND1 exam on my first attempt. I'm still working on ICND2 (Oh! the routing protocols). When faced with prepping for these exams, I had two options (aside from which books/materials to use): buy and build a physical lab environment, or use simulators. I have worked on Cisco gear in the past, and I can state that the simulators nail the interface perfectly. The primary difference is one of time: emulators boot far faster than physical hardware! Yes, a physical lab of routers and switches can give you some real-world experience working with different physical connections and cabling types (if those resources are available to you--$$$), but if you are confident that you can work with cabling and connectors an want to focus on seeing and manipulating the device configurations in Cisco's IOS, the simulations are (in my opinion) the better way to go. Not only was this set of books and sims comparable to or cheaper than setting up a rack of used gear in my house, I didn't need to sacrifice any floor space to do it.

Passed with solid score.
This book did me a solid. I studied for 7 weeks (about 110 hours total), and by using this book (and eBook), with the Network Simulator and Boson practice exams, I just passed the ICND1 with a 920. Going into my preparation I already had a few years of Cisco familiarity with very basic switch and router setup, but the following strategy took me over the top.- Take 4 weeks to read this whole book and do all of the 'Book Questions' after each chapter, and all of the 'Part Reviews' after each part. Don't worry too much about wrong answers yet and skip all of the 'mind map' stuff.- Never take more than one day off from studying/reading. Use you weekends to 'power focus/read'.- During this time also practice subnetting to the point where you're able to do subnetting somewhat comfortably in your head. Its easier than it sounds.- At the end of 4 weeks (three weeks before taking the ICND1) start doing labs, and take both the Boson practice exams and included Pearson practice exams (alternating between Boson and Pearson every three days).- Keep taking the Boson and included Pearson exams until you score 92% or higher on each and every exam. Never take any exam more than thrice.- During the last week lab like a madman...focus upon your knowledge gaps and show commands.- Study VERY little the night before the exam. Watch a movie or something.- Two hours before taking the ICND1, to get everything clicking, do an OSPF and subnetting lab. Also do about 10 questions from a Boson exam.....This should take about an hour and build your confidence up.- Arrive early to the testing facility....sit in your car....and jam loudly to your favorite music.- Take exam.- Shout jubilation to the sky in thanks of your passing grade.

THESE BOOKS ALMOST OBSOLETE!
While this package is nice, I would not buy it now! The next version of the CCNA materials are due out in just over 2 months. I made the mistake of buying this very recently, not knowing that it would be obsolete in short order. The next version will be 200-125, and is only available for preorder, at this time.Other than the bad timing, this package is great. I really like the practice exams found on DVD. That software automatically updates itself, and the testing content. Practice exams are great way of determining your weaknesses and places you need to focus on.I would definitely recommend this, if it weren't for the short lifetime ahead of this.

This comes with the 100-101 and 200-101 books as well as the Cisco Network Sulimulator. Both books are £25 each and the software sells for £70. So this is a total bargain. Reading through the books; the knowledge is clear and well laid out with chapter and topic quizzes that the whole office can enjoy debating (if your into that sort of thing). Well worth the buy if you are planning on taking the course or want to absorb the knowledge to support with infrastructure in a small office with a boss who won't pay for the labs.
