No Slam Dunk

I read the book NO SLAM DUNK by Mike Lupica. The book was about a 12 year old boy named Wesley Davis or Wes for short. It's about the problems Wes faces like with his family and basketball team. [Spoiler Alert] I think the main problem in the book was with Wes and his dad. Because his dad was a major part in Wes's life, he taught him how to play basketball and how to deal with problems in his life. But when Micheal (Wes's dad) came back from Afghanistan he was a different person and Wes didn't know what to do [end of spoiler alert] [spoiler alert] My favorite scene/situation in No Slam Dunk is when Micheal Davis (Wes's dad) stands up to Mr.Rey (Dinero's dad. A player on Wes's team.) About the decision with his son Dinero. If Mr.Rey took Dinero home during the game it would effect the team and the rest of their season. Micheal also told Mr.Rey that a good player makes the team around him better not themselves. Also when Dinero plays it's not always about Dinero. It's about how the team and how they do.[spoiler alert over] My favorite character in No Slam Dunk is Mr.Correa (Wes's counselor) because he was there for Wes when he needed it. He likes to play basketball and shot a nerf ball with Wes in his office. He is kind and helpful, and will go out of his way to help someone. He wants to make sure everyone is their best self. I think Mike Lupica (author) did well writing No Slam Dunk. He did well describing the basketball games, and how they played out. He also described Micheal with post traumatic stress. He also described well how Wes and his mom reacted to Micheals ptsd. My favorite quote in No Slam Dunk is on page 123. It's "It looked like they were going into over time to everyone except Wes Davis." Because it shows thatWes never gave up. I think that lots of my friends who play sports would like this book, the ones who play basketball would like it the most like Luke and Ty. I would rate this book a 4 1/2 out of 5. All in all Mike Lupica did a great job on NO SLAM DUNK.

Great book. My boys both love anything by Mike Lupica. Great books for middle school and early high school aged boys (even my 18 year old will go back and read some that he read in middle school!)

No Slam Dunk is a book about a seventh grade boy who’s name is Wesley(aka Wes) playing his favorite sport basketball. [Spoiler alert] His dad was a navy SEAL who had just came back from Afghanistan. He has PTSD and is a alcoholic who got supersets from his family because of it. Now Wes and his mom are waiting at home until his dad comes home.[Spoiler finished] He now plays the sport he loves most to use it to pass time.I think No Slam Dunk was written well because the author Mike Lupica made the characterization very well. He made it well because[Spoiler alert] he puts two star players Wes and Dinero on the same on the same basketball. They had a lot of differences such as Wes who always tried to pass to his teammates. His one saying is “If I was open but my teammate was more, I would pass them.” Dinero was taught that he was the best player and he should always have the ball. I enjoyed No Slam Dunk because the conflict and the resolution was great. I thought it was great because [Spoiler alert] his dad is coming back from the army and not being the same which then lead him to go to therapy sessions to get better. It was same with Dinero because they had lots of differences that helped them to think in each other’s mind. The that lead them into a into winning a championship.I would recommend this book to people who love basketball. I would do that because it had the same thrill as playing the game. When times like Wes [Spoiler alert] was about to score the game winner or the time when Wes’s dad came to support him and Dinero.

Wes has always been a star, but when he has to share stardom with Dinero his life seems to flip upside down. Wes will have to learn how to deal with Dinero on the court and how to deal with his dad off it. [Spoiler] Me personally I did like it when the dad was yelling in the gym. It showed the significance of him being drunk and his son playing ball. I did like it when the author was describing the games and how they were developing. I liked most of the book but if I had to say something I think could be changed I would say it would be the thought in some of the interactions with the dad. Some seemed a little short. I think the text was very well written and the author put a good bit of effort into his book. The author put a lot of detail into the games and most of the conflict chapters. I think people who like sports,conflict, and change in characters would like this book. This book reminds me of being on the field or court. I would recommend any Mike Lupica book for anyone.-Jayden

Thank you Penguin Kids for providing No Slam Dunk by Mike Lupica. Some of you may know that Mike Lupica is like the SJM of middle school boys. I cannot keep his books on my classroom shelves! So, when Penguin Kids asked me to review this book, I agreed - for my students.Now, I don't love basketball, but this book is much more. The main character, Wes, struggles with a teammate and a father back from Afghanistan with PTSD. Wes's mother is currently running the school book fair! (Believe me, I didn't know until I started it!)No Slam Dunk by Mike Lupica, which was just released is perfect your young basketball lovers!
