Crying Freeman

By a fan for fans
If you're a fan of the source material this is an absolute treat! Watching interviews with director Christophe Ganz, he read the manga, watched the anime and pitched the idea of a live action film, and this was his first theatrical debut. It's extremely faithful to the source material with a lot of little differences that help it stand out. Decent performances, with Dicascos being the Freeman to Connery's Bond- the look and personality captured wonderfully by him even if it isnt the best performance. It's shot beautifully and has incredible action throughout the entire picture, plus one of the most classic 80s manga plots. My only problem with the film is the portrayal of Emu. In the manga and anime she's very driven despite her self loathing, and after forming a bond with Freeman, her life changes around and she becomes more confident. The relationship between her and Freeman is as big a part of the original story as the action, and here it's handled poorly. You don't believe the characters are in love, and the two have no chemistry (strange as they married in real life after production). All in all, a great movie for anyone to watch, but fans will also be very pleased! Don't expect A grade performances, but expect a faithful adaptation thats shot beautifully and full of great action!

MORE ACTION AND EXCITEMENT THAN THE ANIME VERSION!! :D
I preffer this version than the short anime serie because I saw the animated serie and it wasn't THAT good. :(The animation was so-so, the graphics were not so inspiring, some of the characters looked stupid, the action was NOTHING great and the storyline was a little slow.NOW THIS ONE! is the "worth buying it". There is SLOW-MO ACTION like in the John Woo films, FAST gun-fights, BIG explotions, good acting, GREAT martial arts movements and COOL one man army swordman scene!!! ;DIf you think that the story is more important then I recomend the anime version, but if you are looking for COOL FAST action then I recomend this one. This movie have basically the same story as the animated serie but a little summarized.About the dvd: The picture quality is very good but when the camera goes to "close-up" there are some brieff purple lights in the picture but is not THAT annoying, besides, it's only at the begining of the movie, the last best action scenes doesn't have that. The sound hears good but is low volume, so you have to turn up your tv volume to hear the sound much clearer.Adios.

Only really 3 if you read the Manga first
Very odd. I am in America, and I know that I saw this movie years and years ago. I'm pretty sure that I watched it on VHS rented from a Blockbuster back in the 90's (I know based on what they say, how is that even possible?). I was watching pretty much any video they had in the martial arts section and this was there.By that time I had already read a good bit or not all of the Viz manga release for Crying Freeman. At the time, it was a pretty much a let down - which is sad as Mark Dacasco is such a great martial artist and actor. I was especially looking forward to seeing this after seeing Mark's work in "Only the Strong".If you liked this, you most probably will like the manga far more. It's the old book to movie tale. So much more to be found in the manga. And the ending of this is so much of a letdown for a Crying Freeman fan.Years gone by and watching it again, it is better than I remembered without the manga fresh in my mind. This is a gun-toting Yakuza versus Sons of the Dragon (read that as Triad for the most part in this film). It ranges from West Coast America and Japan. Not from one to the other with shots in between just a City (or implied cities) in American to two locations in Japan (three if you count the airport).A car chase, but mostly gun battles with some martial arts thrown in.With the basis being on the manga, I would have expected more martial arts, but I guess "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled" were still fresh in people's minds when this was being filmed. Compared to those two films, the gun fights are a bit wild and mild. The film was still worth watching, and, as I said, I enjoyed it more having years separated from reading the manga.Kung fu movie? No. No training sequences.

Japanese style violence
I like the action and violence. I like the shooting. I like the punching and kicking. I like the sword fighting. I like the explosions. I almost didn't watch this because the intro was loaded with Japanese names. Most of the movie was in English. There were few scenes in Japanese and the CC didn't work but this didn't distract from the story.

The movie doesn't even play on a regular DVD player, only on PC by directly opening the file. Quality is also very bad, apparently a copy from the first Chinese release. If you like Mark Dacascos and this movie just get it through other means until they release the original DVD or even better, the Blu ray.
