The Savage Samurai: Warrior Printse€ˆ1800-1899 by Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi & Others (Ukiyo-e Master Series)

The book has a wealth of prints related to the subject but minimal text by way of explanation. Each section (some categorized by date, some by subject) has a mini appendix which names the print and the artist and shows the date. Unfortunately there is no meaningful explanation of the context, the subject matter or biographies related to the artists themselves or the influences that inspired them. The first few pages have a brief introduction to the genre, the next 250+ pages are just color prints, which tend to become a blur as you progress through the book. Could have been much better if some context had been added.

This was a gift for my husband. I was looking for art from this time period. I looked at various books but I kept coming back to this one. You can only see a few pages so I took a chance. I am so glad that I bought it because it was so much more than I expected. I recommend this book to anyone that likes the art from this period. It would go great on a coffee table. A must have.

This is the best one so far in this series in my opinion. I purchased a few of the others. They are all good.
