Highly recommended!
Our Yorkie had to be put on heart medications so we needed to be able to grind them up into a powder that could be mixed into his food. We also needed something easy to keep clean, yet durable. This has been a great purchase! It grinds the meds into a fine powder and doesn't slip/slide around. It is a nice weight and a quality item. It cleans up easily. Because it is metal, it can be cleaned and used for spices, etc, down the line. (I have cleaned it and used it for spices and it works fabulously for that as well. I like it better than my wooden one.)

Perfect for my need
I cracked up when I read all the reviews from people who bought this to crush their cats' pills. My use is similar. My cat will only eat pate canned food. She's missing teeth, so I get it. She's on a special diet now and there is only one canned food she can eat. It only comes in chunks in gravy. She likes the taste of it but not the texture. She licks the gravy off the chunks and spits the chunks back out. I tried squishing with a fork and spoon but couldn't get it smooth enough. I considered a food processor, but you need a good amount for the food processor to work. I'd have to put in more than my cat can eat in 3 days.It finally dawned on me - a mortar and pestle! This is the third one I tried, and it's the one I'm keeping. I never used one before, so I didn't expect the porcelain to be unfinished. You have to season it with spices and garlic that I don't really want flavoring my cat's food. Then I bought a plastic one. Dead awful. It was too large and light weight.I really didn't want a metal one because of the tink tink noise it makes when you hit metal with metal, but I needed something I didn't have to season. This one is PERFECT!! It's small, so I can barely do half of a 3--ounce can at a time, but that's fine - that's one meal for her. About 2-3 tablespoons. I LOVE THIS ONE! The metal is heavy, so there's no tink tink sound at all. I sit it on the counter and it stays put. The ring around the bottom keeps it from sliding across the marble counter top. It comes with a very soft removable silicone lid that you can put around the pestle when you use it to keep things from flying out. It's made in China. There are no instructions for use and cleaning, and there's no brand name. I looked for instructions online. Some say you only need to use warm water and a scrub brush. Others say to use warm water and dish soap. Some steel mortar and pestle sets can go in the dishwasher. I wouldn't with this one because of the silicone ring on the base. Dishwasher detergent is harsher than regular dish soap and could damage the ring.I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for a set you don't have to season. I'd buy it again.

Best way to pulverize pills
This is an excellent tool, but if you want to use it for crushing pills, be aware that most elderly people will probably not have the hand and arm strength it takes to crush the pills into a fine powder. I do this for my mother and I am in my early 60's and it's not easy for me, and I am still very active and am a round-the-clock caregiver. I first tried a screw-type crusher which was painful to twist tightly, caused wrist and elbow inflammation, and left way too much grit in the cup which then had to be smashed with a spoon - way too much work. This mortar and pestle will pulverize the pills into a fine powder...if you have the strength to work with it.After pulverizing the pills, brush the powder out of the bowl with the small brush that's included in the set, and then brush the bowl again to get as much of the fine powder out as possible. Wipe the bowl with a paper towel after each use to remove residue. People have complained about the bowl having a padded bottom and therefore it cannot be submerged for washing, but it is not necessary to submerge it at all. I did my initial wash with hot water and soap while holding the bowl upright to keep the bottom dry. After that, a simple wipe with a clean cloth or slightly damp paper towel will suffice, since the inside of the bowl is not being touched by fingers or used for food. If you want to make sure it's thoroughly disinfected, wipe it with a little bit of alcohol on a cotton pad.I haven't used the plastic lid that comes in the set, but it's provided to keep the particles from flying out of the bowl as you smash pills. You might want to use it for awhile until you get used to the feel of the pestle and how the pills react to the force you apply. Although the product is advertised in the vendor's photo with the rounded end of the pestle in the bottom of the bowl, it is much more comfortable and effective to hold onto the round end and crush with the flatter end; otherwise, you have nothing to hold onto and it's very uncomfortable when you're applying force. Both mortar and pestle are solid stainless steel; the bowl is very sturdy, and the padding on the bottom keeps the bowl from sliding. Some complaints in the reviews mention the bowl rusting, pills turning gray, metal shavings coming off the bowl and mixing with the pills, and the bowl being hollow and unstable (no way). I have not experienced any of these issues, and I have been using the mortar and pestle twice a day for 9 weeks. Excellent product.

Works well
Good quality mortar and pestle. I use it for crushing medications and it works well. The plastic collar isn’t a great design and I discarded it after a couple uses.

Amazingly Good Pill Crusher!
One of the best pill crushers that I have ever used. So easy to use and with brush enables all contents to easily be extracted. Excellent material all around! Looks very professional and definitely worth the price after trying several others that were shoddy quality and design. Highly recommend!

Great for crushing hard to crush meds
Mortar and pestle: works great for crushing my dogs meds.My dog was started on medications and the only way she will take it is crushed up in her food. I first bought a plastic med grinder. One of her meds is much harder than the other and very difficult to crush in the plastic grinder, a few days in the plastic grinders base cracked. I then searched for something more durable and found this. It works great for crushing the pill that’s hard to crush, makes easy work of it and I don’t have to worry about cracking the bowl/base.Great for crushing pills, much better than plastic med grinders/crushers.
