I used this to patch a canvas I had torn. I know nothing about gesso. This worked ok. It has a very strong odor.

covers beautifully
this is a bit difficult not to get all over the place but covers beautifully and makes a smooth surface for canvases for oil painting....I even use it to cover up mistakes and then paint over it when its dry

nice feel
I have never used it before, but was great for going under fabric that I wanted to paint, also to fill in the "pores" on styrofoam.. I am sure I will use it often... dried a bit slow, but I did speed it up with a blow dryer and it was fine.

Exactly the amount I needed
I put two coats on a full 4 x 8 sheet of masonite that I had cut into smaller panels. It was what I needed.
