Quiet 20-inch Box Fan--Excellent
I want a 20-in box fan that, above all, is QUIET. It is to be used either in my bedroom or kitchen window or in my living/dining room, where I sleep and/or watch TV. Thus, low noise is of chief importance. From the information I have been able to find, including at the Lasko website (LaskoProducts dot com slash box-fans) and among consumer reviews, it's impossible to know just how loud any fan is. The Product Features of a similar model, Lasko 20-Inch Premium Box Fan 3-SPEED , includes "innovative Wind Ring air system provides high volume air movement...that focuses the air movement, increasing its velocity...30% more...than most standard box fans." Gambling that there is something to this more than just advertising hype, I figured this would mean that use of the low speed might be satisfactory hopefully most of the time. The model at hand here, the 3720, does not include as much in its description, but the Wind Ring grille looks to be exactly the same. And since I probably would have the fan in a window at least some of the time, I opted for this model having the Weather Shield. The other does not. When I turned the fan on, I was extremely pleased to find that it is indeed (what I subjectively would call) whisper quiet--that is, on the low speed. But even on the low speed, it does indeed push a nice breeze 15 feet across my living room that except on the hottest days is sufficient to keep me comfortable. Now, of course I can hear it, but it is quiet enough that I don't need to turn the TV up any. On the medium speed, I don't really need to turn the TV up, but I might two or three points at times. And on high, yes, it's fairly loud, but no box fan isn't. And even so, it's only about as loud as the low speed of another fan I have. So for my living/dining room purposes, this fan is excellent. :-) In my bedroom, on the upper floor that accumulates quite a bit more heat than the main floor, the head of my bed is only about 3 feet from the window but 5 feet from the TV. In the window I turn the fan so that it is blowing outward. (In another review I crossed somewhere, the person was saying some fans might blow well but don't draw well. I don't see so much logic in that; unless a fan creates or destroys air molecules, it draws exactly as much air as it pushes. I mean, where else could a fan get the air it blows other than from what it draws?) On low, again, the fan is quiet enough not to be an annoyance, but I do consistently turn the TV up a few points. The air it draws is not a stiff, focused column of air, but a soft, diffused movement of air. With my bedroom door open, and the door and window of another bedroom open to air from the cooler side of the house, within 5 minutes the hot air in my bedroom has been expelled and the room feels appreciably cooler and comfortable. In a bedroom I much prefer a soft displacement of hot air with cool rather than a big, hard blow. So here, too, I am very pleased with the quiet and performance. Then, wondering about the other model, the 3723, I ordered it. Side by side with the 3720, the airflows of the 3 speeds are comparable, if not differing only imperceptibly, if not identical; but the 3720 is noticeably quieter, not much, but enough to appreciate. I returned the 3723, my expense. Slim, light; perfectly balanced, no wobble or vibration even on Hi; metal cabinet is an appealing, subdued, neutral shade of slightly greenish gray that blends well. There's nothing not to like about this fan, other than the packaging. The fan is snug in its factory box, with no outer box/packaging and no Styrofoam spacers, bubble wrap, or other protection. I had to send one back due to deformation of the cabinet, but Amazon took care of the return shipping, thank you. The replacement I've received is fine. This model is $10 or $12 more than the other, but for my money, a little bit more quiet is what I'm after and worth the $12. I've already ordered a second and may order a third. Highly recommended.

Great value - still going strong after 10 years of use.
We have been using the Lasko 20" Weather Shield fan year round for over 10 years. We placed it on our kitchen window sill, facing out, leaving the screen in place. We use it to exhaust cooking smells, as well as to create a mild breeze through the apartment in the warmer weather. It's strong enough to pull air in through the living room and bedroom windows, and out via the kitchen; creating the effect of cross-ventilation where our layout alone doesn't really provide it. I was shopping for a smaller fan for a relative, and looked this up in my order history. I was astounded to realize that we've had it for over 10 years. Status report after 10 years: 1 - Functionally - works just as well as ever in terms of creating a great air flow, quietness. The only thing that really seems to have worn is the knob to select low-medium-high speed. The switch mechanism is probably wearing out; once in a while I have to switch it between on and off a couple of times while nothing happens, before it actually turns on; and it doesn't really "click" into the different levels. But we're still using it, on a daily basis! 2 - Noise level - Quiet on low, but has a higher noise level on medium and high, as one might expect. This has not changed over the years. I believe that it has some kind of permanently sealed in lubrication; you never have to oil it. 3 - Cosmetically - Maybe a little lacking here because I've not been so diligent about cleaning it every year, and the paint on the frame may be wearing thin in a few spots. But you can unplug the fan, unscrew the front and back grids and give it a pretty good cleaning. As we use it in the kitchen, and in the city, it has greasy deposits on the grid and on the edges of the fan blade, but these do scrub off with a good cleaning. 4 - We left it in the apartment for 4 months during some renovations over 5 years ago, where it was used by the workmen, and expected it to be demolished when we moved back in, but although they used it every day, it was still going strong when we returned! I would definitely purchase this fan again if I needed to. It was a great value.

Fans are poor quality, off centered blades create extreme noise
The fan brand quality and design are both poor. This creates wobble vibrations, unstable fan balance even with feet design, sharp edges, and "weather shield" appears to be upon out-blowing air formation only, there is no back engine "weather shielding" visible on inspection item. I should have returned it immediately, but it was very hot here, so my family did try to make due. The noise became truly unbearable with loud clacking sounds each time the off-kiltered blades hit the metal backing. Little pieces of plastic began to fly and the item was damaged. When we went to pick it up to inspect it, there are loose pieces of metal around he screw areas and other places of the aluminum on these that cut into my fingers. When it happened to just one initially I thought it was just the one faulty unit and set it aside for a project. then the second began to create noise as well. Upon inspection, it appears that the wobbly is unfixable, because the inside of the rotational area houses a "weather shielded" fan blade assembly, that has no track. this means it is easily falling off center without any rigid design to hold it in place. Not only is this disappointing but I also waited too long to return them. I would strongly recommend another type of fan. This was purchased because the quality of Lasko fans used to be remarkable a few years ago. However, the way the internal blade piece is attached now will always stretch and cause the wobble problems that cause that noise. I am not sure it will always be this noisy, and one of them functioned properly for 1 month. This is not a bearings-issue noise but the internal blades are not stable so they hit the metal supports in the back. It seems that the design could have benefitted from a circular back or indeed true weather-shielding to the back of the blade assembly as well. It is not a good design. The level of noise is deafening and disturbing to the family. It is extremely loud "clacking" when it hits and the speed causes the blades to damage. This means the unit is unusable- both of them.

They work great, even in my chicken houses
great box fan, I choose the weather shield motor because it lasts a lot longer in my chicken coups where I use them for ventilation. They run 24 hours a day, for about 9 months out of the year.

Comparison of Commonly Found 20" Box Fans
This review is for: Lasko 3720 20" Box Fan How on earth do you choose a box fan? Well really they mostly choose us don't they, we choose the first box we see. The product descriptions aren't much help, they mostly all say they are quiet, powerful, low cost to operate, etc. Are they really all that different from each other? When looking for a replacement fan I found 2 of our fans were recalled in 2005 for fire hazard, so now I am replacing 3 fans. I guess in-plug mini-fuses became universal for a reason. Let's get started... The 20" box fans we'll compare are: A - Aerospeed BX100 B - Holmes HBF2002A C - Kenmore 32002 D - Lasko 3720 E - Lasko 3721 F - Lasko 3723 G - Lasko 3733 H - Lasko B20201 DESIGN AND DETAILS: --------------------- All have white fans and grills, gray enclosures, 245-260 square inch areas the blades pass through, and 70"-73" cords. A - Aerospeed BX100 - Wavy grill (BX200/BX400 have other grills). - Fan speed dial is on TOP. - Little smaller enclosure (you wouldn't notice unless side-by-side), though the blades pass through an area near to the highest square inches of the bunch. - The in-plug mini-fuse is easily replaceable if it blows. B - Holmes HBF2002A (Target) - Simple grid grill, blades have circle connecting them. - Fan speed dial and plug connection are on the MIDDLE OF THE BACK. This is not ideal if bringing air into the house from a window and not an attractive option when exhausting out. - The in-plug mini-fuse is easily replaceable if it blows. - Looks exactly like the Kenmore 32002. - NEGATIVE: At top speed it vibrates like crazy, enough to move itself. C - Kenmore 32002 (Sears/Kmart) - Simple grid grill, blades have circle connecting them. - Fan speed dial and plug connection are on the MIDDLE OF THE BACK. This is not ideal if bringing air into the house from a window and not an attractive option when exhausting out. - The in-plug mini-fuse is easily replaceable if it blows. - Looks exactly like Holmes HBF2002A. D - Lasko 3720 - Circular grill, blue logo on the front, blue speed dial. - Fan speed dial is on TOP. - Lasko promotes this as their fan of choice to PUT IN A WINDOW because it is more RAIN RESISTANT (not weatherproof). - All Lasko in-plug mini-fuses are not replaceable. - This is a wider (4 3/4") and thus fairly STABLE fan enclosure compared to some of their models. - Should be mostly the same as 3721, except this has the blue logo. E - Lasko 3721 - Circular grill, blue speed dial. - Should be mostly the same as 3720, except no blue logo. F - Lasko 3723 - Circular grill, blue speed dial. - Fan speed dial is on TOP. - Although it physically LOOKS LIKE one, this is NOT one of the rain resistant ones like the 3270/3721 (larger size, blue dial, etc.). - All Lasko in-plug mini-fuses are not replaceable. - This is a wider (4 3/4") and thus fairly STABLE fan enclosure compared to some of their models. - LOOKS just like the 3721, larger enclosure and no blue logo. But again not a rain resistant model. - NEGATIVE: Rattles a little at all speeds G - Lasko 3733 - Simple grid grill. - Fan speed dial is on TOP. - All Lasko in-plug mini-fuses are not replaceable. - NEGATIVE: Shakes a lot at settings 2&3. - NEGATIVE: Listeners thought the hum tone was more annoying than the others. H - Lasko B20201 - Simple grid grill. - Fan speed dial is on TOP. - All Lasko in-plug mini-fuses are not replaceable. - NEGATIVE: LOUD at highest setting, listeners thought annoyingly so. - NEGATIVE: Little more of an airplane hum/whine sound. "(yelling over a fan) THEY SAY THEY ARE ALL QUIET!" aka NOISE: ----------- First some things that may help you get more out of this section on noise.. - It takes +10dBA to be perceived as a doubling in LOUDNESS. - It takes just under +6dBA (5.85dBA) to be perceived as 50% (half-again) LOUDER. - It takes just over +3dBA (3.22dBA) to be perceived as 25% (quarter-again) LOUDER. (Note: When you read that +3dBA roughly doubles "sound pressure" that's different than perceived loudness) Most sounds 50dbA on up have more of a potential to annoy, for example when while trying to talk, and especially starting at 55dbA (highly subjective, but gives you an idea). Okay, now onto the comparison.. SUBJECTIVELY listeners liked the WHOOSH of air sound much more than that of the HUM of a rotating object. I noted next to the fan descriptions above which ones listeners felt had a sound they didn't like as much, regardless of loudness. If a little additional on-going expense for a fan makes this much less costly alternative to air conditioning more palatable, then that's probably a good investment. However, being green is an important factor for some folks, so here below is a comparison in electricity usage I measured. The fan surface measurement was done roughly 1/2 way up the fan blades right against the grill. On fan surface air velocity half-way up a blade at one point is, of course, just a sample point, and air velocity at a distance can be greatly affected by the degree of focus/dispersal. Nevertheless, I hope this air velocity info helps us get a better sense for the differences between the fans. (A) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................5.7mph......2.3mph......1.6mph 2................7.1mph......3.1mph......2.1mph 3...............10.6mph......4.6mph......2.6mph (B) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................7.7mph......3.2mph......1.6mph 2................9.5mph......3.9mph......2.0mph 3...............11.2mph......4.2mph......2.1mph (C) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................7.7mph......3.6mph......2.1mph 2................9.8mph......4.6mph......2.6mph 3...............10.4mph......5.2mph......2.9mph (D) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................8.0mph......3.1mph......2.4mph 2...............10.6mph......4.6mph......2.7mph 3...............13.1mph......5.0mph......2.9mph (E) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................7.8mph......3.6mph......2.0mph 2...............10.5mph......4.5mph......2.6mph 3...............13.2mph......6.2mph......3.0mph (F) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................8.2mph......2.8mph......1.9mph 2...............10.6mph......4.1mph......2.6mph 3...............12.6mph......5.0mph......3.4mph (G) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................6.8mph......3.0mph......1.6mph 2................8.9mph......3.7mph......2.0mph 3...............10.9mph......4.6mph......3.5mph (H) Setting.....Fan_Surface.....5' away....10' away 1................9.4mph......2.9mph......2.3mph 2...............11.6mph......4.6mph......3.2mph 3...............13.3mph......4.9mph......3.9mph SELECTING A FAN: ------------------ I removed these fans for excessive shaking, rattling, noise, and/or hum/whine: (B)Holmes,(F)3723,(G)3733,(H)B20201. I then removed one fan for the center placement of dial and plug connection due to non-ideal position for window placement: (C)Kenmore. This leaves these to choose from: (A) Aerospeed BX100 (D) Lasko 3720 (E) Lasko 3721 Some other little Aerospeed BX100 (Fan A) comparative details: - Option of lowest air velocity and noise would be of interest if someone will be very near. - Replaceable in-plug fuse in case it blows, the Lasko ones aren't replaceable. - Classic all-white front if you prefer that (like 3721 but not like 3720 with its blue logo). - The option of a little quieter at the very low end of the loudness range. - Lower electricity usage. Lasko 3720 and 3721 (Fans D&E) for their part give the option of a little more air velocity at the very high end of the velocity range. The Lasko 3720 and 3721 also look a bit different than the Aerospeed BX100, so looks may be another deciding factor for you. Note that for any given loudness or air velocity they overlap in, these models have very similar sound/velocity profiles. That is, when comparing points where air velocities are roughly equal for the fans (at the same distances), the loudness difference is so small I can hardly tell which is louder and the numbers support that. So there it is, my favorite three and some ways to compare them. SUMMARY: ---------- In the end these are just classic 20" box fans which are more similar than they are different. Hopefully whichever you choose won't be a lemon and will work for many years. Perhaps somewhere above you'll find information you can use to choose the best fan to meet your needs. Whatever you get, if it rattles, shakes like crazy, makes an annoying hum, etc., try exchanging it for another, don't settle, there are less annoying fans out there and you'll be listening to them for many years to come. I hope this helps someone :). SHOPPING NOTE: ---------------- Millions of 20" box fans are sold in the U.S. every year. Review sites cannot get anywhere near a statistically valid user sample, so although we learn from comments about DEFECTS and EARLY FAILURE, I suggest not filtering out a model based entirely on them. There are also old reviews that have already been acted on by manufacturers to improve the product or fix a description, thus the review may no longer be accurate. That said, defect and early failure comments with details are great for FEEDBACK TO THE MANUFACTURER (or author) and to help us all much more quickly SPOT SIMILAR ISSUES and thus get an exchange while it is quick and easy to do. Again though, I wouldn't use them to filter out a model entirely.

Powerful airflow / a dorm life saver
I got this for my dorm, and it moves a ton of air. The fan is definitely on the louder side, but I don’t mind it, the white noise actually helps me sleep, and it keeps the room from getting hot and stuffy. Even on the lower settings it’s strong, and the build feels solid for the price. It’s decently big, not very heavy and really reliable. If you need serious airflow and don’t care about a little extra noise, this fan is a life saver.
Q**S
Very strong, but very loud.
pros: - huge airflow ( the lowest setting may be too much for some applications ) - highly durable cons: - very loud - feet seem flimsy I bought this fan because I had an old Lasko fan that lasted almost a decade. As a replacement this fan blows significantly more air. I usually like to have a fan running pointing at me during the night to help keep me cool. But to be honest this may be a little too strong for that purpose. If you are looking for a fan to cycle air in or out of your house, this thing will definitely do that. It seems well built and a durable quality, it also has a metal chases rather than a fully plastic one. Now for the cons: This fan is loud, there's a very audible sound even on the lowest setting, and on the highest setting it's practically a white noise generator. Also the feet that came with it are very difficult to install, and seem very fragile. Like if I accidentally fall into the fan it would definitely break or bend the feet. Luckily the fan seems capable of standing on its own without the feet.

Standard box fan - dents easily, but convenient knob
Standard box fan. Noisy, but expected for these standard box fan models. 3 modes. Difficult to sleep on mode 2 or 3. Generally I only sleep with it on mode 1. The knob is placed on the top which makes it convenient to turn on/off or adjust speed, when turning it around either for intake/exhaust. It fell twice from my window, and the metal frame is dented. The dent makes the metal frame slightly off alignment with the plastic covers. Speaking of plastic covers, it is relatively easy to clean. Unscrew the plastic covers and rinse with shower head, wipe the interior, and it is clean. I wish there was a more convenient method instead of screws, such as a snapping on/off cover. Screwing/unscrewing is a hassle honestly. As a fan, it does its job of cooling my room on hot nights and promoting air flow. I place it on the window sill during the summer. Edit 6/30/24: Downgraded from 4-star to 3-star because it started to emit a burning odor. Fan was purchased 7/8/23, so didn't last even a year. It's arguably 2-star, but its noise level is more tolerable sleep-wise amongst box fans while having above average air flow. Back to the burning odor, it seemed like the fuse that controls the fan settings burnt out. The knob became stiff to turn, and now only works on low. It's a fire hazard at this point. It dropped over a couple times and dented when I first began to use it in 2023, so that may have damaged the fuse and lowered its lifespan, leading to the burnt smell. On the other hand, a search for key word "burn" in the reviews shows that this is not an uncommon issue for customers.

Buen producto
Me gusto mucho... no hace ruido, el aire frío y sobre todo si lo colocas en una ventana o en un lugar donde corra aire ya que lo hará más frío.... muy recomendable

Good. Recommended
Had used Lasko products when in U.S. The quality of frame has come down over years. But will serve the purpose, as the previous one had served more than 7 years. Would love to buy this or other Lasko products only if the price is realistic. Cannot pay three to five times actual price in the name of import fee. The seller is good. Cart 2 India. Only had problem with the courier
