Great system, don't use the install service, just do it yourself
The system overall is great. I purchased this for outside home surveillance as our neighbors are questionable at best. Now I can simply switch my TV input over and see what is going on instead of standing at my front window. The camera quality is great and it does record in real time. The night vision works excellent and I get about 100ft of usable video distance at night, more than needed in my situation. I've used all 8 cameras, which is a bit of an overkill at my residence, but there is no external area uncovered by a camera now. The most useful has been the porch mount as I get excellent face and body coverage of anyone at my door, whether I'm there or not. I haven't used the remote connectivity yet, it's not really a concern for and I feel like I'd obsess over it and have to watch my house all the time.- A word about Lorex's professional install service:I went online just to see what it would cost me to have it professionally installed, and there was a card included in the pack. After spending about 20 minutes online filling out camera installation areas and square footage, I submitted the form and got the "someone will call you" page. This was irritating, but I went with it. About 2 days later I received a call from them. They obviously didn't look at anything I filled out, which further irritated me. I stopped the person who called from going through their whole speech and asked them what the average cost is. The stated it was $100-$200 per camera to install, plus and additional fee (I never did get an actual price) for installing the DVR and connecting it to the internet. So, essentially, a $300 camera system would cost me a minimum of $2000 to install. I told them forget it and did it myself. It is very easy as all the connectors are already installed on the wiring. The hardest part of the whole install is positioning of the cameras and getting the wiring down the inside of the wall.

I will never buy anything like this again from Amazon or anything from Lorex
I bought this item in November on sale on Amazon and put it away for a present. This past weekend we tried to install it and the dvr does not boot up past the initial start up screen that says Lorex. I tried to call Lorex and was on hold for over 40 minutes. I then sent an email with no response as of yet. I also tried to search online for a resolution but found none..It is too late to return this item so I am out the money and a working present. I will never buy anything like this again from Amazon or anything from Lorex. An expensive box of non working equipment.

Easy for Mac and PC Don't need Pro Install
the only inconvenient part of installation is hiding the cables that run from the cameras to the DVR. I guess if you don't mind seeing cables, even that's not hard. I know there are wifi cameras but I prefer the stability and security of wires for transmitting video. The iPhone/iPad app makes monitoring a breeze. If you have physical limitations that call for a pro installer, that's one thing but don't waste your $ out if fear or intimidation of all things electronic. Times have changed. It's not like setting up an old VCR. This thing practically installs itself while you watch.

Please learn from my mistake
This system was a pain to set up. I've had it a year and it still doesn't work right. I've given up. I'm waiting until I feel I have the money to buy another one and throw this one away. Look at the reviews just for lorex's apps. Its a good indicator. None of there products seem to work right.

Great buy!
Works great, easy to install! Still have issues with the internet portion, but they are being worked out as we speak! I can now see my entire property, 3 gated entrances, down my breeze way and behind my out building!

NOT Mac Compatible Worst Support EVER
The cameras "work", the DVR "works" but after TWO YEARS of trying to work out with customer support how to get this system viewable over the internet, I surrender.Their sales literature and sales team over the phone plainly stated that this system would work with an Apple based location. (apple desktops, apple wireless router) all connected via a simple cable internet router. We've had dozens of "service tickets", close to a hundred hours listening to hold music, dozens of technicians saying they would call us back while intimating we should change our business platform to Windows. It has been the single most frustrating technical encounter I have ever had. Ad to this, i am no novice in the tech world, having working in IT for years. For me to write this, is saying quite a bit.

Why do these customers insist on deceiving by making it look wireless?
I wonder how many people order these things thinking they are wireless because these companies insist on not showing wires. The reason? To make it look like they are wireless when they aren't.Truth in advertizing. One small footnote that says it comes with 8x cables is not a sufficient effort to assure that customers know how this is implemented.
