Sophie Ellis-Bextor's sophmore album was like more of a review of "Read My Lips" and "Trip the Light Fantastic" (which I loved) it was indie pop and Britpop combined. Unlike the third and first albums respectively I found myself skipping tracks and I had to listen to some tracks three times before I thought they were decent. My favorites are You Get Yours (which should have been a single), Mixed Up World, the Walls Keep Saying Your Name, and I Won't Change You. Other than that her sophmore effort was medicore.

One of the more personal works by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, this album also has a (somewhat unfairly) reputation as being inaccessible to the casual fan. While not as disco as her first LP nor as pop as her following two works, there is something to Shoot From The Hip that ties itself to her most recent album, the slightly gonzo and melancholy Wanderlust. I'm very fond of the last half of this album but the more uptempo pop and dance numbers that stack heavy on the album's front end aren't without their own treasures. The lyricism is exponentially depthful and eloquent (my personal favorite coming from the decidedly dancey Mixed Up World: "I look around my life and all I see is contradiction and lack of faith, cynicism rules the day. I know it has its place, but I am really needing guidance now reminding me I'm strong inside."), and overall this is one of my favorite ever pop albums, by a wide mile.

It is too bad she is not known here in the United States!! A very talented artist!! She should do a tour here!!

I just recently purchased this along with her 2001 debut "Read My Lips". Her debut was a slick, if slightly tame in spots, euro-disco trip. The eccentricity was there, but only peppered through her debut, here Sophie played up the eclecticism.This is probably one of the best pop records I've heard in sometime. It is a clean & strong record, no filler, just great songs. Clocking in at almost 40 minutes, "Shoot From the Hip" is a mixed bag of pop all grounded in her familiar sensual euro-disco sound, but isn't fixed there."Mixed Up World" opens up in a manic pop whirl, recalling the great styles of late 1980's electric dance music & early 1990's house respectively. It reminds me of vintage Cathy Dennis in some cases. Lyrically, this is one of the strongest songs, one that deals with perserverance & determination of the human spirit. Other highlights include the hopelessly romantic thump of "I Won't Change You", the rock inflected "You Get Yours", & robo-funk of "Another Day" come to mind.There are two songs I will focus on in particular: the one-two ballad closers "I Am Not Good At Not Getting What I Want" & "Hello, Hello". Both find Ellis-Bextor utilizing her beautiful accented voice to it's emotive fullest, without sacrificing her icy demeanor. From an arrangement point of view "I Am Not..." recalls classic torch, & "Hello, Hello" sits pretty in an alternative setting that would do Tori Amos justice.Ellis-Bextor is clearly someone who is slightly underrated. Not only does she write her own material, she possesses a very alluring stylist voice, & manages to surround herself with production talent who can bring out the best in her, without sacrificing her personae in the process.I highly hope that Ellis-Bextor records a follow-up worthy to this masterpiece. I recommend this to anyone who likes good music, take a chance, I'm glad I did! Highly recommended!

The first time I listened to this album, I didn't really like it. I thought it was somewhat boring and forgot about it for a couple of years. I guess it just clicked for me at some point and now I can't stop listening to it.Highlights:Mixed Up WorldI Won't Change You - the lyrics might be a bit too saccharine for some, but I think it's quite catchy.Party In My Head - One of my favourites. The reviewers criticise the lyrics, but the music and Sophie's voice create such a laid back and enjoyable atmosphere that I don't even notice if there are any flaws in the lyrics.You Get Yours - this one has a somewhat aggressive sound, very catchy.I'm Not Good At Not Getting What I Want - The best song on the album in my opinion. It's a very beautiful ballad, laid back and somewhat melancholic.Hello, Hello - another laid back and beautiful ballad.

Zunächst möchte ich kurz sagen, dass ich hier nur das Album bewerte und nicht die viel diskutierte neue blonde Haarpracht von Ms Sophie, da diese, ob sie einem nun gefällt oder nicht, nichts mit dem Album zu tun hat. Aber allen Lästerern sei doch gesagt, dass sie Sophie ja schon in ihrer brünetten Zeit nicht gerade ungeschminkt präsentiert hat und solche Spielerein einfach zu ihrer Persönlichkeit gehören.Ihre Stimme ist ja zum Glück unverändert traumhaft.So, nun aber zu dem Album :).Shoot From The Hip (SFTH) ist das dritte Album mit der Sängerin Sophie Ellis-Bextor und nach Read My Lips (RML) ihr zweites Solo-Album.Dass SFTH nicht mehr die Überraschung wie RML werden würde, war ja abzusehen, schliesslich ist jedem der RML kennt auch Sophies Stil bekannt, 80er inspirierter Elektro-Pop.Und genauso wie bei RML sind die Albumtracks wieder "ruhiger" als die (erste) Single Mixed Up World. Also wer RML nicht kennt und hier ein Disco DAnce Album erwartet wird enttäuscht, denn Sophie macht Pop, mal tanzbar, mal nicht, aber Pop.Ein Murder On The Dancefloor findet sich wahrlich nicht auf SFTH, allerdings war der Song auch nicht wirklich Sophies Werk und ging schon sehbar von ihrem Stil weg. Natürlich heisst das ebenfalls, dass ein potentieller Chartstürmer wohl auch nicht vorhanden ist, da die zweite Single Won't Change You auch eher popig ausfällt. Hier liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass wie schon bei RML noch neue Singles nachgeschoben werden könnten, aber da müssen wir uns wohl überraschen lassen.Wer nun allerdings dankt, dass SFTH eine RML Kopie wäre, der irrt sich. Natürlich bleibt Sophie ihrem Elektrostil treu, allerdings ist sie nun viel experimentier freudiger geworden. Dies spiegelt sich zunächst darin wieder, dass die Lyrics, obwohl Sophie hier eher Minimalistin ist :), wesentlich abwechslungsreicher und aussagekräftiger, sowie persönlicher sind.Sie singt zwar noch hauptsächlich von Liebe (ist ja auch schön ;)), dies aber phantasievoller und vorallem melancholischer und bedächtiger, teilweise an ihre Independant Zeiten erinnert.Aber auch die Songs als ganzes haben sich verändert. Sophie experimentiert mehr mit den Rhythmen und ihere Stimme, mixt an manchen Stellen mehr, wird aber auch wieder ruhiger. Hier lässt sich auch eine deutliche Weiterentwicklung feststellen und das ist auch gut so.Hierbei muss ich nun aber auf den Grund für den Punktabzug kommen, nämlich zwei Songs die auf dem deutschen Album fehlen, Making Music und I Won't Dance With You. Während ich das Fehlen des eher beatigen I Won't Dance With You verschmerzen kann, fehlt Making Music deutlich, ist es doch die atmosphärische Intro des UK-Albums. Wer also die komplette Tracklist möchte, muss zu der UK Fassung greifen und den Mehrpreis hinblättern, deutsches Publishing sein Dank.Das Traurige hierbei ist, dass das bei RML schon genauso gemacht wurde, allerdings war weder Final Move noch Sparkle die Intro !!!!!Die ist aber der einzige Minuspunkt, denn wenn man sich auf das Album einlässt ist es wunderschön anzuhören und trotz des wahrscheinlich geringeren kommerziellen Erfolgs ein würdiger Nachfolger als Read My Lips, der auf den zweiten Blick neue Akzente zu setzen weiß und sich somit eine erfreuliche Eigenständigkeit bewahrt.Sophie beweist sich wieder als wunderbare Sängerin und Songwritterin, die sich von der Masse abzuheben weiß.Hoffentlich klappt es auch ohne ein Murder On The Dancefloor mit dem Erfolg.Fazit: Schöner ElektroPop, teilweise ruhig, teilweise schmissig, mit einer wunderbaren Stimme und deutlich persönlicher und experimenteller als der Vorgänger.Ein Punktabzug für die fehlenden Songs, nicht für die Musik.

Une très belle voix, des airs un peu disco, une musique qui reste dans la tête, à écouter en boucle.

I found this to be a very disappointing Album from Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Where "Read my Lips" had been full of bright sparky ideas, "Shoot from the Hip" is turgid and lack luster. Might I even dare to say tuneless. What has gone wrong?Sophie, get a grip. You can do better than this!!

街のＣＤショップでよく見かけるのは10曲収録した盤ばかりですけど、こちらは２曲多く収録されているのでお勧め。一聴して前作収録の「Murder on the Dancefloor」や「Take Me Home」といった超キャッチーな１曲はない（ように思いました）けど、前作と同じ路線で全体的に耳馴染みよく楽しく聴き進めることができます。おまけに、シークレットトラックにオリビア・ニュートン＝ジョンの「Physical」のカバーまであってびっくり。あくまでおまけ曲でありますが。

Really not good. Can't think of a decent song on here, which is disappointing as she's done some very good albums since.This one was a "miss", though and not one I'd recommend.For what that's worth.
