Does The Job
I recently ordered this printer for my laptop. Since most of the real important things that I print are performed by my desk top with the much better printer, I set out to get something cheap, and, that would simply just do the job for quick printing needs. I am happy to say that my experiences so far with this little printer have been a true success. It was very easy to install. You unwrap the printing cartridges and install them, plug it in, and then run the software which takes about 5 minutes or so before prompting you to plug the connecting cord from the printer to the computer into the USB port. (And NO, aggravatingly a USB power cord does not come with it. Either order it along with your printer here on Amazon, or pick one up locally). That's it. I went from plugging it in to printing something to test it out in less than 12 minutes. There was no cartridge alignments to make or any other adjustments, it just worked fine from the start. And so far the printing quality has been nothing less than excellent. Though some other reviewers have referred to this printer as slow, I feel that it prints quickly and clearly enough, and that the subject of speed is dependent on what one is used too with their experiences with other printers. Personally my opinion is that it prints in a very timely manner. In conclusion, I realize that this printer is very cheap price wise, and, that some other reviewers here have mentioned it dying or having problems after a short time. So far mine is performing flawlessly, and if that changes over what I feel is an unreasonable amount of time, I will certainly update this review. As for now, I give this Deskjet 1000 5 stars for performance, and value... : )

Great printer for the price!
This is a great, cheap little printer! I was working in another state for a few months and didn't want to lug my huge all-in-one there, so bought this printer for $30 at the local Target. I doesn't have a lot of bells & whistles (so don't buy this if that's what you're looking for), but I was just looking for a basic printer and that's exactly what this is. Setup is quick & easy, the print quality is good (equal to my $100+ printer), and it's pretty quick. I also like that it's compact (the paper feed tray & output tray fold up to make the printer nice and compact). When I moved back home, I had to leave the printer because I didn't have space in my car to fit it. None of the stores in my area carried it, so I was glad to find it online. If you're just looking for a cheap printer and/or if you're space-constrained (small apt, college dorm, etc.), I'd recommend this printer.

Great printer for my laptop
I run two computers at the same time, a laptop and a desktop. If one goes down, I always have the other, and I will usually let the laptop run most of the time as it consumes less energy and takes care of most of the days junk like email and searches. The problem I was having, is that I run a full capability HP 6500 for the desktop but the laptop did not have print capabilities until I ran across this little guy. At $30.00 (now higher) it is a very good bargain, and takes care of what little printing I need for the laptop. I could spool to the laptop, but this was just easier, and gives me more redundancy. The printer was very easy to set up, and was up and running in a few minuets. I have been using HP pen and inkjet printers since before they were offered as personal computer printers when all we had was the dot matrix type and ink was used for CAD Drafting/Design printing only and we replaced a pen at a time, and then on to the cartridge. It is true, that HP makes most of there money off of the sale of ink cartridges, and not the initial sale of the printer, but at the very low cost of this unit, and the relatively low cost of the cartridges this machine uses, this is probably overall, the lowest cost HP printer you will find. And it comes with its own little carry bag.

Expensive printer
I don't print stuff regularly: about once every 2 months for a Groupon, the annual tax return, occasional return shipping labels for Amazon, holiday coupons... In fact, I don't think I'd need more than 40 pages a year. So when I found this printer, I was ecstatic. $25, whereas every other printer is closer to $100, has a bunch of features, like printing on photo paper, or high resolution, or high speed -- none of which I care about. I wouldn't mind if the printer took a whole day to print my taxes, which I only need to do once a year. And so I would have given this printer 4, maybe 5 stars if it lasted for any significant period of time. $25 is not a significant cost for such a convenience. Unfortunately, it did not quite reach my prudent expectations. Let's start with the black ink (since that's all I ever used). HP's product page says it could print up to 190 pages. The cartridge is a tad under $15. I've only printed 40 at most, when black started fading. What was a couple benign streaks at first would soon fade to sky blue, and then entire lines would disappear altogether. The printer is now a literal ghost of what it was in its prime. HP's updater tool proved to be a useless ancient relic that must have time traveled its way into 2012. In an age where Adobe Flash almost instantaneously downloads 20MB updates in the background, and free, open-sourced utilities are hosted on servers that have the bandwidth to allow anyone to make full use of their cable internet speed, HP is stuck taking almost 5 minutes establishing a connection, and then 5 more downloading a 3MB file. That begs the question of where, if not time travel, their servers are hosted that still use that 56k dial-up; perhaps they have a backlog of those 30-day free trial AOL discs that they used to hand out with HP desktop computers. The diagnostic tool shows that I have 99% of the color ink unused, and about 60% left on black. Unfortunately, as there is no way to select whether to use color or black on HP's drivers, I can't use color to print black even if I wanted to, and I can't force black and white if I didn't want color. Despite having most of my ink left, I'm forced into whatever HP wants to use to print my return label, which is apparently nothing, so I will probably be forced into keeping a $60 shoe that is a size too small unless I 2-day airmail that next cartridge of black that will hopefully be less ephemeral as the last one, but I'm not holding my breath. Either the printer destroyed the cartridge and all the diagnostic tools are completely useless, or the HP official cartridges that we are forced to buy have quality control issues -- the result is the same regardless. I'm left with a piece of plastic in Vegas deciding whether I want to throw $15 into the next slot machine. If it's the printer, then a new cartridge would be pointless. If it's the cartridge, then how long will the next one last? 40 pages... or 190 pages? Should I buy an additional cartridge just in case the next one runs out at some inopportune time as well? And if I do, would I have been better off just spending $75 for a more worthy printer that presumably lasts longer and prints more pages? I have forever lost faith in this product...

Good price for a basic printer
Nothing fancy here. It works and does it's job. Seems fairly quick to me. Make sure you have or get a USB cable as it doesn't come with one. You get 1 of each ink (color, black) with this printer. The ink together is more expensive than the printer, assuming you get the recommended stuff. Get the good ink. Trying to save a buck, I've had nothing but trouble with the cheap, refill stuff. A printer is not much good without ink. The printer does seem a bit fragile. I was a little afraid I was going to break something putting the ink cartridges in. Of course most of the time I assume it'll just be sitting there. After using it for awhile, the paper goes about a 1/4th of the way, stops and an error pops up. No paper error or something like that. I just re-seat the paper and then it usually works. I used to work at a paper printing press, so always fan out the paper, so they don't stick to each other, so don't think that's the problem.

simple, but a good little printer
I moved during the past few months and lost my all in one printer somewhere in the transition, well I needed a printer and with limited funds from moving and buying new furniture I looked up some printers here on Amazon and came up with this one. I read the other reviews and settled on this one, figuring it will be okay to get me by for a month or so. I ordered the printer cable also from Amazon because it does not include one and it was no big deal, both the printer and cable arrived quickly. This printer was very easy to set up, it took me just minutes and I am usually terrible at anything dealing with any kind of technology ( my 22 year old son always does these things for me), I was able to do it on my own is how easy this was. I will also say this is a good reliable printer, I am constantly printing, I always print coupons on line and my kids use it for school work and printing reports, I have had this printer for several months now and I am not concerned with buying another all in one as we really did not use the other features often at all. I am very satisfied with this printer, it works very well, the ink is easy to find as I like to stock up because I use often enough to want extra ink on hand, most stores I have been in carry this ink and Amazon has it as well. either way good low price and great working little printer, and if space is a concern for anyone this printer takes up very little space. I would recommend this to anyone and I would buy one of these again if necessary.

This is a good printer
This printer works great. It prints very satisfactory quality and is a very reasonable printer especially for the bargain price. It is a simple device, all it does is print documents. No scan no fax no copy. Just print. The speed is acceptable. The print quality is good. Quite acceptable for home or home business use I would say. Of course this is not a high end Photo Printer or a high speed business printer and should not be expected to perform to that standard. It is however a very good basic printer. So IMHO there is nothing not to like with his little printer, it is a great deal. FYI ink cartridges by HP, are as usual, rather expensive. However one can buy remanufactured cartridges both color and black from several suppliers found on Amazon at very reasonable prices. Further, if you are so moved, you can refill the cartridges quite easily.

Great for occassional Printing
Pros: -Inexpensive Printer -Easy to set-up -Relatively high quality printed image for price Cons: -Ink is expensive -No wireless capability -Doesn't come with a printer cable This is a good printer for someone like me: someone who doesn't print often, but needs an inexpensive, reliable printer next to my computer for those few times when I do need to print. I bought this printer about 3 weeks ago on Amazon, it was delivered fast and well-packaged (as is usual for Amazon). I have printed about 15-20 pages since I've had it, all black and white. The image quality is good for my purposes. I did initially have a problem with the set-up, but determined that the problem was a bad printer cable. This printer doesn't come with one: if you have one you know works, you'll probably be fine. I bought a cheap one from Amazon, which was faulty, but I returned it to the seller and got a full refund. A new (much more expensive) printer cable from Radio Shack solved the problem immediately. To address some issues I've read about in other reviews: I've never heard my printer "self-clean" in the middle of the night or anytime for that matter. Mine has a "stand-by mode" that it goes to after about 5 minutes, and then shuts all the way off after an hour or two. I have to physically turn it back on if I want to print something (which is fine by me... as I said I don't print often). I just checked the ink levels and the reviews are right: Ink is used pretty quickly. I show about 10-15% used from the original black ink cartridge, but the color cartridge is 100% full. I have purchased a high capacity black ink cartridge from Amazon, it was about $25 (which is almost as much as this printer cost). I expect I'll get about 100 pages with the printer cartridge that came with the printer and hopefully 200-300 with the higher capacity cartridge. If so, that will likely get me through about a year or so. I hope to not have to replace the color cartridge in that year. Bottom line: This printer would be a good choice for someone who occasionally prints, and doesn't mind turning the printer on each time and can put it near their computer (no wireless). If you've got a printer that just died and already have a printer cable, and the above describes you, I'd recommend this printer. If you print a lot, you should probably spend more on a printer to find one with less expensive ink cartridges. I'll update this review with any pertinent updates.
