The other brands are pretty weak. These packets last long enough to really enjoy and the colors are brilliant. On New Years eve we all sat around a great camp fire and my son tossed 2 packets onto the fire. When the very vivid flames began our family members from young to old were stunned! We told them what it was and the smiles and laughs were truly priceless. Everyone began taking pictures and enjoyed the trickery. Its really worth the money. It lasts just long enough. I only buy the packets, the crystals fizzle out and the color is not like these packets. As the fire was winding down I had my son go the the front yard and light a paper lantern and it floated right over the house, jaws dropped and I had everyone go to the kitchen table and write out what their hopes for the new year were and that put a beautiful feeling to the start of our new year.. And I am still being told that I am the best Auntie ever. Between the mystic fire and paper lanterns I am still getting hugs. and a week ago my youngest niece called me on her lunch break to ask me where I bought both items. She showed her coworkers the photos and several of them wanted to buy some mystic fire and paper lanterns. Are they safe for the environment?** A: Do you trust China not to send a tainted product? In other words no I would not advise using these inside I use all the chemicals involved I am a pyro technician. And a handle these chemicals you need to wear a respirator and protective clothing and gloves, does that sound safe for indoors? **Q: Can you then use the fire to roast marsh mellows if you use this product?** A: First, the colors ONLY show up if you have a very hot fire (a good, hot wood fire). As a mom, I would NOT cook food over the fire afterward - the colors last awhile and they are made by poisonous material, so I'm not confident it would be safe for food. I would roast marshmallows/hot dogs/whatever BEFORE using these. But I am not with the company and haven't read the MSDS, so it could technically be safe. This is just my intuition as a mom. **Q: Are these ok for use on a dura flame log?** A: Yes they are. I always use two regular wood logs and one dura flame log and it works perfectly. While it's by no means a necessity for camping, the price was right so I thought I'd give it a try!We threw 3 in the fire at once. I'm still not sure if the different pouches contain different colors or if each pouch is supposed to produce a rainbow of colors, but the 3 pouches I've used so far had greenish and blueish colored powder inside them (do not open them beforehand - I did not open them beforehand either but I was able to observe this as each pouch melted open in the fire) and we had obvious blue and green flames. I have included a picture of our fire before and after the pouches were added. This was a definite hit for all ages! I would recommend this as something fun to try and could even twist it into a learning experience as my 14 year old started talking about a similar experimen he had done in science class!My only negative comment on them (as you can see in one of the photos I posted) was that there was some loose "powder" in the bag upon delivery. However, all 12 pouches are packaged together in a slightly larger bag. Therefore, the small spill was easily contained and it did not make a mess outside of the bag! Here's the deal: the item is small packets made of plastic about the size of an instant hot chocolate pack, but more rectangular. You toss a packet in your fire, and as the fire starts to burn through the plastic, the material inside ignites and you start to see blue and green flames in your fire. The effect is neat. We used it for a fire in our fire pit during camping. To really get a cool effect you'll have to use more than one pack at a time because the effect is pretty localized on the area you threw the pack in and the packs are relatively small as mentioned before. We cut open a pack, and the material inside looks like blueish sand. We wanted to see if we could get the effect by pouring this sand directly on the fire or spreading in all over the wood, but no luck!! Not sure what is so special about the bags. They seem to be just tough plastic. But the sand only seems to burn well if it is inside the bag, as per the directions from the manufacturer. Regardless, the effect was fun. We enjoyed using it and added a little ambiance to the ghost story telling! Also, because the effect was created by chemicals, we DID NOT cook any food over the open flames. You should probably cook any hot dogs or marshmallows first before you decide to use this product.
