Not complete but complete
Even though the book is unfinished I gave it 5 stars. The characters feel real. For example, I have the same affliction that the main character has. The details made me think that Conan Doyle had the same affliction. I was surprised by the religion in the book. It is not preaching to you just a normal conversation. The writing made you feel like you were in the room with them just listening in. Also I would tell Mr. Smith not stalk. Read it and you will see. It is an easy read. I so wish this could be finished but obviously Conan Doyle is no longer with us and it would be a crime to have someone else try to finish it. It is perfect the way it is.I will tell you that if you want to read this because you saw this book on Criminal Minds, the book is not the same size as it is on the show.

Great for Conan Doyle enthusiasts
If you are a lover of Conan Doyle's work, both famous and obscure, then I highly suggest purchasing this book! It reads more like a stream of conscious narrative by Conan Doyle himself, and if you have read his works before, you will catch the phrases and plot lines that he used from this first attempt to develop his later stories. It is a great window into a great mind as well.

excellent
If you are looking for a little insight into Doyle's writing process before Sherlock Holmes, this is the book!As an avid fan of anything Sherlockian, I found this book fascinating. One not only sees the shades of Sherlock and Mrs Hudson, but also the mindset of Doyle regarding a vast array of topics, including philosophy and politics. The book also contains passages that were crossed out by the author, another vision of the author's process. The language is of the period and I did have to pull out the dictionary but what a wonderful "visit" with the author.

Conan Doyle's first full-length novel
Well, almost full-length, several chapters were lost, but it is still a great read. John Smith, at 50, is given a young Conan Doyle's personna, with his views on men's (and women's) values, the breakthroughs in medicine during his lifetime, his disdain of organized religion, and his hopes for the future.

So-So
I'm a died-in-the-wool Sherlock Holmes fan... and decided to read this because; (1) it was written by Arthur Conan Doyle, and (2) it played a part in a very poignant "Criminal minds" episode (Mathew Grey Gubler's love)...I'm having trouble getting through it... not sure of its 'purpose'... it is sort of a stream of consciousness "Narrative" as the title suggests. I will struggle a bit further, but probably won't finish it.A disappointment.

Surprising insights
Some of the topics explored seem very advanced for the times in which the author lived. I listened to some parts the book more than once because I wanted to give his ideas a chance to sink in.

interesting
not what I expected, but delighted. Perhaps, its raw state were the seeds of something more powerful. I enjoyed it

Tough Read
The book is interesting as a counter-point to his other works. It has a tendency to wander and is somewhat confusing.I did enjoy the book and it was we'll worth the effort.
