Hi, I’m James Atkinson - Jim to my friends and readers. I am also more than happy to answer any questions so please feel free to drop me a message. I’m a qualified personal trainer and fitness coach who loves to help others reach their fitness goals. I have been training for over twenty years. This training has taken me from long distance running to bodybuilding competition. It is fair to say that I have learned the secrets of weight loss and fitness from my own personal journey. There is a lot more about me and my career over at my website – jimshealthandmuscle.com so I won’t bore you with it here. :-) So this book is all about fitness for the beginner. Believe me; I can empathise with the beginner! There is so much contradicting information out there today that it will confuse the training newbie to a point that it will actually kill any motivation and stop a goal in its tracks. This is why I wrote this book, If I happened to be a beginner to fitness, overweight, recovering from an injury or unhappy with my body in any way and I know what I know now, this 6 week routine is exactly what I would do to start me off! Good luck and remember that I am always happy to help where I can so feel free to give me a shout if you need more info. All the best Jim Review: It is true - Success in 6 weeks - Of all the many aspects of James Atkinson's books and programs and on and off line guides that make them special, it is his absolutely no nonsense approach that takes first place. He is a realistic, thoughtful, caring, but direct coach and he foregoes any ballyhoo about promises that can't be kept. He takes the time to offer sound advice to prepare his followers, discusses all types of training from the dietary aspect to resistance training, cardio training, tucks in some supportive information of DMOS (for those of us who are beginners with Jim, that stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) and how to differentiate that from muscle injury, and Motivation - that all important ingredient in successful training. Aligning the new beginner with the right kind of equipment and the instructions on how to pace and schedule training so that it becomes a natural part of your lifestyle are also very special features of his writing and shared experience. He keeps it light but committed, focused, showing the correct manner in which to do sets with excellent photographs to assure you are aligned with his concept, and even gives bonuses such as a terrific set of healthful recipes! AND in addition he keeps in mind the budgetary constraints of joining his avenue of transforming your body - what equipment is necessary and what is dispensable. This is the kind of program that is finally accessible to all those who care about health and fitness. Following this program is a pleasure (even with the DMOS...!) and becomes solid supportive way to tackle those goals. Grady Harp. August 14 Review: Enhancing my body transformation plan - I'm working on my "body transformation plan". I already have a healthy diet and a metabolism boosting program as well. Now I need a proven exercise routine to increase my weight loss progress. The problem is that I don't like go to the gym and I don't have money for expensive equipment. Luckily I stumbled upon this book that is offering exercise program for beginners with minimum equipment and without using a gym. So, I'm going to try this 6 week routine because I like the strategic approach of this guide. It is focused on long term fitness results.

Wonderful!!!
A very good place to start after an illness or injury interferes with a regular fitness program! That way you don’t have to start from the very beginning again!! You just test out where you are at from how long the illness or injury put you back! And adapt the exercises until you catch up to the rest of the program! I love it!!! It’s exactly what I have had to do over and over again! But this is a more structured way to do it than I did!

Not what I expected
Not a much resistance band training as we expected. If you are looking for resistance band workouts look elsewhere.

Good exercise book
Being a health care provider, the first thing that caught my attention and relaxed me with this read was the section, at the beginning of the read, “Health check” which emphasized the importance with having medical clearance to start in on an exercise regime, and when to stop exercising because of potential risks inherent in exercising, eg: going beyond pain. Ethical prudence in anything involving the body whether it be an exercise program, nutritional counseling, life-style changes, etc. is of key importance. Once nicely relaxed with this read, I ventured on into reading about other key factors to exercise: food and motivation; which were conservatively and effectively written. Author James Atkinson then begins with and explanation of resistance training, explaining what it is and making the excellent point that it is “sadly overlooked” in its relationship to not just building muscles but burning calories. He then explains cardio training, otherwise known as aerobic exercise. The actual six-week plan looks like a comprehensive, easy, and doable program with photographic explanations of the how-to at the back of the book, which is needed and effective. Lastly, the author makes a disclaimer at the end of the read that this book “was not proof read or published by a professional body” which might turn some off because there was no medical or “professional” backer supporting the claims etc. What the author is merely pointing out is that he had no help with the publishing, marketing, design, or editing. He is in fact, by virtue of his experience as a trainer, the expert writing from that which is not dogma or supposition but rather what he lives. It is a useful and well written exercise book. I'd surely give it a try.

Very well structured beginners fitness program Review
I have been meaning to lose weight for a while. It seems that there are thousands of training programs around that will help. After only a few pages into this book, I realised that many of these will work for you, but it is the structure and progressive nature of the training program that will be the factors in your success. By the time I read the book to "week 1" I had everything in place and was actually excited about starting! (I have not had this excitement about a fitness routine before) I have not yet started week 1 but I have everything ready. This is something that the author helps you with and strongly recommends that you follow this "preparation process". It seems to have worked for me. There are motivational quotes that you can use and plenty of support that you can put in place for you to stay on track. There is a full 6 week training routine that gets steadily more challenging. (This does start off very easily). There are lots of illustrated pictures and descriptions of the exercises that you will be doing at home with resistance bands and household furniture. All in all this is a great book and although I have not started week 1 yet, I am very hopeful that I have found my "solid foundation" and know that this is the start of great things for me. Thanks Jim Mandy (Reviewers better half)

good read
simple to read and with all the pictures of the exercises, they were easy to follow and do. this was just a basic book to get someone started with bands and how to use them properly, worth the short time to read.

Highly recommended book for people afraid of the words ‘exercise’, ‘workout’, ‘fitness’ and all others relating to getting healt
I’m addicted to food, have a lot of health problems and exercise is hard because I have various injuries. Until recently I had a defeatist outlook about this and thought that I would be overweight and unfit for the rest of my life. Then something changed in me, I decided enough was enough and I CAN get healthy despite all the blockades (but didn't feel ready to go to the gym). I Googled and looked on Amazon to get advice on natural weight loss and beginner exercise – there is a lot... Jim’s book came up and I bought it straight away. When it came I read it in less than an hour – it’s very easy to follow and clear of what you need to get started. The exercise plan starts out gently and slowly builds up over the 6 weeks. I knew that some the exercises would be a challenge to me so I e-mailed Jim and he replied! He helped me a lot in adapting the routine to my needs. He’s really friendly and genuinely wants you to succeed, which is so encouraging. Okay this is turning into a long review, the point is THIS BOOK IS GREAT and so is Jim.

Super perfect for beginner
I used this as a beginner for basic fitness program to use with resistance bands at home. Happily integrated walking as well for overall fitness and a bit of cardio. I really appreciated the 6 week program showing which exercises to do each day, with the number of sets and reps for each day. I referred to the instructions and the diagrams so as to do them properly. I really appreciated the pdf copy emailed to me upon request which made that easier for me. I am enjoying the routine of it and going to make it a habit to continue. I will upgrade the resistance bands to increase strength. I am using a walking/running app on my phone to track my walks and will increase speed and distance once I am fitter. I prefer being outside to being in a gym. I have Jim's motivational card printed and on my fridge: You don't have to be GREAT to start, but you do have to START to be GREAT !! Brilliant..!! Happy to have this book, I looked at many and this was a good choice.

Great guide for those who need a progressive and accessible excercises guide.
Good guide, especially for those new to excercises or like myself, returning after an extended period. Simple to follow but effective, the excercises build slowly. Recommended.

Good book to start getting in shape
Excellent book for anyone begining a fitness program. Would have given 5 stars but for a few problems. 1) Author only mentions jogging as a cardio exercise. There sre other options that should be mentioned. 2) Book goes through 6 week program then leaves you hanging on how to go on past the 6 weeks with no mention if you restart from week one and just increase the reps. 3) Needs to show different ideas in week 3 for ab crunches. Not everyone has room in thier home for the big exercise ball. Fix these issues and it would be a 10 star book
