currently cooling the chipset/M.2 cover
Was tired of seeing my MB chipset temp sitting in the 53 area when i opened icue, decided to look into heat sinks. Looked for quite a bit before stumbling across this TX3 Socket 478, large surface area, check, tall fins, check, mounted fan, bonus. Bought this, some double sided thermal tape, and a Noctua NF-A6x25 PWM fan. Stuck it in there directly onto the chipset/M.2 covers and set the fan setting on the moon. Chipset is at 44 so it dropped 9 degrees, The 4 NVME drives were resting at 39, 41, 44, and 45, they are now resting at 37, 38, 39, and 39. I will be passing along the information and links to whomever will listen. It's on an MPG X570S CARBON MAX, CPU and GPU are both water-cooler so ambient temps in the case sit around 22.

Great for older systems
Added it to a Intel Core i7 860 in an old Hp Elite build. I had replace the old until as I couldn't find a replacement fan as one of the fins broke. The offset between the screws and the part that comes in contact with the die was off by a bit compared to the old unit, but I placed of the thermal compound that came with the new heatsink, screwed it down, and pulled it back up. The heatsink definitely sits correctly! Turns out the original sink didn't even have thermal compound! Been running since 2008 like that! Thermal compound looks like a normal desiccant bag (the thing with beads in it that keeps packing dry) so be careful not to throw that away. Will Temps review if there's any issues with temps.

Revised review -- product was OK after all but does need instructions
Originally sent a negative review last week because I could not get the pins to go into the holes of my 775 board. It turns out the fan's pins were shipped in the "installed" configuration rather than "ready to install", and I was not familiar with these pin types. After some work I was able to get the pins set up right. An instruction manual would have been helpful for us novices so I could spot the problem. Otherwise all seems good and it did ship with a small packet of thermal paste.

outstanding CPU fan & heatsink
I have always found StarTech products to be good quality, and this item is no exception. The fan and heat sink are slightly larger than the Intel assembly that came with the processor.Executive summary: you don't have to remove your motherboard to install the retainer plate.A note about installation: when I saw pictures of this product I was unsure about how to install the plate that contains the screw holes. The included retainer plate mounts under the motherboard's base plate, and the screws are long enough to protrude through the motherboard and its base plate to make contact with the retainer panel.

Unable to install. Weird pins & NO instructions
Right now, after fiddling with this for 1 1/2 hrs, it's back in the box. I expected a replacement similar to the original where I line up 4 queues and, with a screwdriver, I queue them in and 5 mins later I'm back up and running. I haven't a clue what to do because there's plastic tips and nothing to queue in. There's also no instructions. Zero. Nada. Zip. I went to their web site and nothing there, either. There's an arrow on the top of each pin indicating counter-clockwise, which is not "righty-tighty". I tried turning them while off the unit and could see no change. I've a feeling I'm supposed to press on these but that seems like a lot of pressure AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, I don't actually know if that's what I'm supposed to do. Waited 2 days and no PC and these people don't see fit to provide instruction? Not even on their web site?Wish I could give it less than a star. Can't post so changed one word. Hope you get what I mean.

Great for DIY power supply or load projects
I got 2 of these heat sinks to cool the load transistors in a DIY DC load kit that I built. The transistors can pass about 25 amps each (x4), so these heat sinks need to handle a fair amount of heat (~100W). The fans generate a lot of cooling and the heat sinks get pretty warm, but they work really well. And for $12 they are pretty reasonable.
