Covers all the Openings, then, he starts the early midgame annotations - TEN STARS
The author knows his stuff and he gives almost move-by-move (once tactics begin) short notes!(In other words, this book is not going to explain the first four to eight opening moves.)It's not a strategy book (for that, get Edmar Mednis' Strategic Chess in Closed Openings,a great book to learn independent thinking. Also, Michael Stean's Simple Chess).700 games are all decisive in twenty moves, and the champion author knows his audience---amateurs (advanced but not professional masters). He challenges the enthusiastic playerto see what is not always obvious, and gives the side notes so a computer is not necessary.Excellent layout, organized, just great! There is a diagram for each game, but, it's not alwaysat the ending moves. So, a chess board is sometimes best to enjoy these games. Be aware thatthis book is not about mistakes in the first eight moves (like Pandolfini's 1. e4 Traps and Zaps) andit's very often more advanced than Chernev's Winning Chess Traps (10-15 move games, e4 and d4).(Chernev's book title is misleading, those are not all traps, but are short sometimes difficult games.)Also, Kalinichenko doesn't much cover early d4 traps, for that, get 222 d4 Traps, by Knaak and Muller.700 has all the openings, not all variations. The reader needs to know opening names because theindex is by the name of opening with only the first two-to-three specific moves listed. This is the onlyimprovement the book might need, longer move orders in the otherwise excellent table of contents.Or, show the names of specific opening gambits, variations, in maybe an appendix. Note --- 700 ismostly focused on often-played openings (it's very light on say Trompowsky, or Blackmar gambit).Again, these 700 expert to GM played games have either winning moves, or not-so-obvious mistakes, inthe late opening to early midgame. His annotations only RARELY refer to database sidelines. Almost all ofthe annotations focus only on the game itself, which makes this book TEN STARS! But, to really enjoy it, thereader should have already studied tactics of early e4 openings (Pandolfini), and for d4, Knaak and Muller. These 700 games are not "dummied down", these are enjoyable while also difficult. A very good book!
