E-Z LOK Knife Thread inserts for hard wood significantly reduce the possibility of stripping when using a threaded fasteners in materials such as oak, cherry, and maple. Ideal for applications ranging from furniture to cabinetry to storm shutters, E-Z LOK Knife Threads are easily installed using a standard screwdriver or optional drive tool. Simply drill the appropriately sized hole and thread in the insert like an ordinary fastener. Proprietary external Knife Threads slice into hard wood, providing holding power superior to that of typical broad threads which crush wood during installation.

... well made but in harder woods they don't set easily unless the hole is exactly the right size
These are well made but in harder woods they don't set easily unless the hole is exactly the right size. As other people have already noted, in hard wood these will actually just bore out the hole and the threads will not burry in the sides of the hole if the starting hole is to small. In cherry use a 13/32 hole, in oak you need to make a 7/16 to make these catch and set. I used a 1 inch SS 10/24 screw with 1/8 allen head with two opposing nuts threaded into the insert to screw them in to the wood. I also tapered the end on a going in first to allow it to catch better. It shaves right down on a grinder since its brass.

Awesome Discovery!
I've started using these everywhere that I may need to put a screw into wood that may need to be removed in the future. For example, attaching wood bench tops to steel frames and installing hangers/accessories in the plywood walls & ceiling of my trailer. Quality and consistency are perfect. Given that they are machined from solid brass, it's amazing they're so inexpensive, so I'm gradually stocking up.The driver tool (sold separately) makes installation much easier and is easily worth the small expense, although you can still install them with just a screwdriver. If you install a lot of them (like I'm starting to do), it may be worth having some drill stops to ensure consistent depth while pre-drilling holes in wood.

Drill size needs to be 25/64
It doesn't say it in the description, but note that the outside diameter is quite large. The packaging says drill size needs to be 25/64 which is too large for my usage as I would sacrifice structural integrity

Tool may be required.
These insert nuts are found in your local big box stores for a hefty price. Luckily we have Amazon to come to our rescue! The brass is a soft metal and the threads can be easily damaged.Don't use a screw driver. The notch is there because they make a tool designed for it, but even the E-Z Lok tool I wouldn't recommend (because it doesn't actually thread into the nut, especially if you're using these on hardwood.) Instead use a threaded tool like http://www.amazon.com/Wrench-16-18-Inserts/dp/B0035YF49K/ref=pd_sbs_indust_25 this. (Dependent on the type of insert nut you get)Like another poster said, if you are using these screws on hardwood you will need to get the very next size-up drill bit.

Very Nice Threaded Inserts
These inserts cost a quarter what the Home Depot ones do, and are at least 4 times better quaility. With a hefty screwdriver, I had no trouble getting these down into the pilot holes I made. The Home Depot ones broke apart, and didn’t stay when I put them in. Not a problem for these.

Larger than expected
Planned on using these for a sub box and speaker pod builds but the diameter is wider than the usual hardware store brand I usually use. They also don't like to go into mdf at all.
