The Complete Poems of Sappho

Wonderful read, and the extra commentary and history is so interesting to learn about

i bought this for my girlfriend (now ex 😔) for her birthday and annotated it with things that reminded me of her/us. sappho is the most famous lesbian in history, so i figured it's be perfect for our sapphic romance. our breakup was unrelated to this book. i was unmedicated and alas a terrible person unfortunately. but this book probably prolongated our relationship! 10/10 recommend for all lesbians and all women and all history nerds and all poets and everyone in general.

Much like an apple pie with ten percent apple and ninety percent crust. I must retract my previous statement.An excellent book with an excellent,in depth introduction.Buy it by all means.Brings the muse back to life.

Wonderful to read and gives insight to a time and language that otherwise seems to be lost

Even as fragments the words on these pages are stunningly beautiful. It leaves me with a longing for more...but the rest is buried in the sands of time.

A great classic come to life. And a must read for all people seeking new look at modern life. EXCELLENT

Many attempts by the translator to sanitize the homoeroticism of the original writer; there is no classical context given, and this displayed an intentional deromanticization of Psappho's poetic cant/voice. Shame on me; this is the last time I buy a cisgender man's translation of classical Greek literature.

This translation is a beautiful read and I found both the introduction and additional commentary helpful and insightful in understand the wider context as someone who has not studied ancient greece extensively (or, really, at all)

Excellent book of poetry from this renowned poet thousands of years ago.

As many reviewers and fellow schoars have noted over the years, Barnstone has a genius for making us hear the voice of the poet he is translating. In the case of Sappho, that's practically a miracle, given the time in which she wrote and the fact that all that remains of her poetry is a collection of fragments. Yet one feels both the power and the beauty of those fragments coming through in this translation. Truly a great service.

Love "The Complete Poems Of Sappho"...I started to read this book as soon as it arrived (on Friday, Oct. 9...in pristine condition!) and am already halfway through it...this is a book I will definitely read again and again! Thank you!
