The Future of Mixing
I am a bit surprised there are no reviews for this yet. It pleases me to be the first. Now, I have not run sound for national tours. But, I do have my own studio and have won Best Sound Design for my work with Pantochino Productions in CT. I won 2 years in a row now at BroadwayWorld.com. So, my review comes from experience using this amazing piece of equipment.I had been using an analog board for quite some time. I was very used to my MixWizard and all the cool knobs. I also liked the warmth of the Allen and Heath board. But, I only had EQs. I did not have gates, compressors or any outboard gear. They were all extras I did not have money to spend on, nor did I have the space to lug around a huge rack. But, I did know if I wanted to get to the next level I needed to expand. And, enter the digital age.Low and behold the RM is released. At first skeptical to "cross over", I did what any "newbie" would do...ask questions. I talked to musician friends who were using this and they all HIGHLY encouraged it. After talking to my friends (all working pros) and doing my research...I bought it.BEST...DECISION...EVER!!Each channel has it's own:1. EQ2. Gate3. compressorThis eliminates carrying a ton of gear. Also eliminates unneeded sifting through layers upon layers. The learning curve to navigate the app is roughly about 1-3 minutes. Download the demo version and explore.Everything you need fits in a 3U rack space. How easy is that?16 inputs and 8 outputs-all xlr...no need for balanced/unbalanced TRS cables. You can connect a laptop with an RCA cable. That's all you need. The iPad app.As mentioned above...Can it be any easier to navigate? Main mix is blue...sends are yellow and reverbs are purple. You can also add an icon to label each channel. There are no annoying layers to sift through to get to where you need to go (sorry to be repetitive). If the iPad is too small, you can get a touch screen Win8 computer. Advantage? A FOH touchscreen AND you can mix on the fly with the iPad. Or, you can use your touch screen as a FOH "mixer" and use your iPad for your monitors. Oh yea, the QMix app for your phone makes your iPhone the control for your monitor.WifiThere are a ton of routers out there. Check the PreSonus website. They recommend routers that are approved to work well with the RM. For me, I spent the extra money and got a Apple AirPort Extreme. Yes, it was expensive...but it is BULLETPROOF. I have mixed 7 shows and have not had a single dropout. There is also a PreSonus Forum on Facebook. All members are super helpful and super friendly. They are always willing to share. The Sound.ahh, of course...the sound. THE reason to buy this. Crystal clear, and extremely balanced. Yet the RM does not have the "brittle-ness" that other digital boards have. Actors all commented on how much clearer and less muddy their monitors were compared to my analog board. My band commented on how much punchier my drums were. BD was thumping and really drove the band. The verdict is in...RM is a win!!!
