The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks

A fun read for those into fighting zombies anyway possible. A hoot.
The undead are everywhere! This informative fully illustrated text gives a concise historical summary of the numerous zombie attacks around the world. This volume covers reported incidents up to 1992. I am sure the zombie situation is still not under control and everyone still needs to arm themselves to the teeth in order to protect those still living. Remember the only way to stop a zombie is to take out the brain anyway possible. This text covers the following zombie recorded attacks: 60,000 b.c. Katanda, Central Africa, 3000b.c. Hieraconpolis, Egypt, A.D. 121 Fanum Codidi, Caledonia, A.D. 1579, The Central Pacific, A.D. 1583, Siberia, A.D, 1611, Feudal Japan, A.D. 1690, The Southern Atlantic Ocean, A.D. 1862, St. Lucia Eastern Caribbean, A.D. 1893, French North Africa, A.D. 1942-45, Harbin, Japanese Puppet State of Manchukuo, A.D. 1960, Byelgoransk, Soviet Union, A.D. 1992, Joshua Tree National Park.In conclusion, though this volume did not cover the many present day zombie reports. The author may want to investigate the many "Resident evil" zombie cases reported by Alice. She probably has killed more zombies than anyone else on the planet and is also a victim of devious undead experiments. A fun read if you are into fighting zombies.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Fabulous read for even the most squeamish
I'm not a big reader of horror-related books, but I couldn't pass up the ingenius humor of the Zombie Survival Guide when I first saw it in the bookstore years ago. I'm now a committed Max Brooks fan. His meticulously committed writing style soon had me convinced that zombies were lurking over my shoulder ready to take a bite out of my unsuspecting body at any moment. I couldn't help but reassure myself by quickly taking inventory of any possible bludgeoning item in the immediate vicinity. Even more intriguing were the Recorded Attacks detailing previously unknown zombie attacks throughout history. I waited anxiously for the release of The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks graphic novel and quickly devoured the contents when it arrived. Roberson does not disappoint. Each story was rendered to transport the reader to the historical era in which it occurred and leaves the reader with no doubt that our history teachers omitted extremely important events in history that would prepare us for fending off the zombie hordes. Recorded Attacks is visually disturbing as any zombie-related graphic novel should be, but not so disgusting that non-horror readers, like myself, would be repelled. Unfortunately, the book was limited to illustrating the accounts in the original. Understandable, but it left me wanting more. Guess it's time to re-read World War Z.

Good but not satisfying
I saw this book listed on amazon some time in late 2008 and just ordered it pre-order and have been waiting since then to get it. The initial release date was pushed back and I waited almost a year for it. I love Max Brooks' zombie novels, survival guide and world war z are the best zombie novels out there and as such i was highly anticipating this. First of all it was my own fault not researching to find out this was a graphic novel, I don't dislike graphic novels but was expecting something more substantial. If you have read his other books you will recognize some of these stories as anecdotal from them so a lot of it is not entirely original material. The artwork is very good, and the stories are good. But it honestly took me about 25 minutes to read the whole thing. I liked it, and will probably like it more when i read it again but don't expect this to be the 3rd "book" in his series it is more like an illustrated companion to some of the stories he has already told.

Excellent appetizer for Brooks' other work (or a dessert!)
Unlike a lot of the negative reviews, I knew what I was getting in the post when I ordered this (so if you can't read a product description, why are you giving a bad review?)...The graphic novel is a really fun read, especially for hardcore zombie fans. It's exactly what the title states, a collection of short stories of recorded zombie attacks during several different times and places. Most are only about 9 or 10 pages, so you get through the book quite quickly. The art is fantastic, depicting gory details of the different attacks. The dialogue is a bit light however. I just wish that Max Brooks dove a bit deeper into each event, adding a bit more depth to them.If you're already familiar with Max Brooks' other zombie books, you'll find this a nice accompaniment to the other tales. And if you're not, well this is a nice introduction to the world to zombie attacks! Also, if you like what you've read and what to read something a bit more detailed and character driven, try The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman.

Great Stories, Great Detail... Very Scary!
I really enjoyed Recorded Attacks!! When I read Zombie Survival Guide for the first time, one of the things I loved most was that the historical accounts gave real perspective. I think they did a great job illustrating that mankind was extremely vulnerable to this threat, this ancient threat, unless we calmed down and used our brains.Recorded Attacks does a great job at developing these stories. First, the plot lines definitely succeed in conveying a feeling of absolute terror. The thought of being chained into the hold of a slave ship?!?! Very creepy!!!! Can you imagine if the WWZ stories were adapted to a graphic novel? (Yonkers! Cross your fingers!) The illustrations are also extremely well done and I loved the details. I especially loved the illustrations of the reflections in the swords of the shield society warriors.I also wanted to thank Max for coming out to the Borders signing in Northridge, CA! It was really nice for him to come out and spend time with his fans. (Although I forgot to ask him what happened to the North Koreans in WWZ. I still have nightmares about that chapter!!)

Just too short
Great artwork. Fun series of zombie outbreaks throughout history, but each story was way too short and the book is so shortvas a whole. That's the only dissapointing thing about this book. You can read the whole book on your lunch break.

A good visual companion to the recorded attacks section in The Zombie Survival Guide
As a big fan of Max Brooks' The Zombie Survival Guide I enjoyed the section on recorded attacks where the author describes many different fictional incidents involving zombies. On discovery of this graphic novel I purchased it immediately as I found it an exciting prospect seeing these stories I read and love in a visual medium. The art is simple and clean with great shading highlighting depth (none of that scribbly Frank Miller stuff) which I liked but I thought that a bit of colour could have given the illustrations a bit more pop. For those who thought they would find every story from the recorded attacks section laid out visually in this graphic novel you are sadly mistaken. Only a few of the better ones have made it in, which is a shame due to all the stories being well written. I would have loved to have seen the story where a pilot crash lands and finds an old fort mentioned in an earlier story.Overall it's an entertaining experience but suffers a bit as the colourless illustrations (which aren't quite The Walking Dead detailed) fails to pull me in and keep me interested in each panel for very long. Plus lack of other great stories from the original book is a downer. Even so Max Brooks fans should definitely think about buying this book.

Graphic Novel
I am a big fan of Max Brooks and his Zombie books, and enjoyed this new addition, even though the book is quite small and an easy read, the drawings are brilliant.Slightly overpriced, if you love your zombies then you need to get this.
