Some bitter spots, no freshness date on them. Taste stale and old.
This arrived well packaged and quickly. I looked for an expiration date, but found none. Nor did I see any date when they were harvested, if they were frozen or stored in a refrigerator. If you do neither of those things they recommend using them within 3 months. (I learned this after the fact, unfortunately.) I tried four of the nuts. Each one had a very bitter taste in parts, a slightly off-putting smell. The nut meat was tender as I would expect. I have to conclude these were old product and not the quality to eat in sections. I will keep looking for a local source for unshelled walnuts. I thought the price was awfully good...now I know why.

No bang for the buck. Average quality nuts.
There are good things and bad things I can say about this brand of in-shell walnuts. To start, the majority of the nuts are relatively small compared to the ones I have purchased in the store. However, in this case, having some small ones are good, those are the ones we feed to our 14 generations of squirrel friends. The bigger ones we tend to keep for ourselves. It's VERY easy to test the freshness of a walnut (This applies to pretty much all nuts) and it can be done quickly in one of two ways - 1.) Shake the nut. If it rattles a lot then the nut is old and dried out from lack of water. More than likely that will not be a very good flavored nut or might have been compromised by worms. Crack the shell anyway to see if it's still OK for wildlife to eat or to use in compost. 2.) fill a medium pot with water and dump the nuts in the pot. If they float, they are no good, if they sink they are good nuts. This is true about 95% of the time. The majority of these nuts have been OK. About 1/3 of the nuts in each bag don't rattle around. The rest have to be cracked and checked for worms, dryness, mildew, rot, etc. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, there is not packing date on the bag. Thought the nuts I got seemed to be fresher than other brands here on Amazon, if you do not know the harvesting or packing date, it's a risk of being improperly stored and can go rancid fast. I tend to steer clear of companies that do not specify the year of harvest or packing date for these reasons and would highly advise others to do the same. Especially if they are in stock at Amazon which may be stored at room temperature rather than in a cooler which is where they should be stored if they are going to "Sit around".Now for the bad part - This brand used to be WAY cheaper. Initially, I was paying $9.99 a bag. Then there was a promotion and they were selling for under $8 bucks. However, in the last two weeks alone (as of the date of this review), the price had jumped THREE times! From Just over $10 to over $11 and now over $12 a bag! I have found better deals for bulk walnuts elsewhere. Even on Amazon. If you want bulk nuts for a decent price, best to look elsewhere. If you plan on having a raw walnut on occasion then this bag will more than likely suffice.

Fresh and tasty
I love walnuts, as long as they are not cooked into anything. Fresh tasting walnuts that are out of their shell are almost impossible to find, and if I do find them I eat them way too fast and their gone. I've no self-control in that area. In-the-shell Walnuts, help me to eat a more healthy snack and makes it much easier for me to limit the number I eat. The problem is that they are only available around Christmas Time. I was very happy to find these available, but was not really expecting much since I sort of think of Walnuts as being out of season in July. I was happy to find that these tasted as fresh or fresher than those I have been buying locally at Christmas time. The shell easily, and taste great. I will be buying these again.

FRESH!!?
Best walnuts I've ever eaten. Super fresh and plump. Buttery, creamy and juicy. Shell cracks easily and the nut pops out in two gigantic pieces. I had one where the whole nut was completely together. Never in my life has that happened. The two halves were one unbroken nut. Ok, my final verdict. I'm nuts over these nuts.

Happy Customer
I bought these for a craft project, so I did not eat them and cannot rate the taste. They are great walnuts and a great price for a 2 lb bag. I bought 6 lbs (3 bags) and out of 224 walnuts, only 12 were broken and not usable. I just ordered a 4th bag as I ran out & didn’t have enough to finish my project.

Squirrels love these.
Although I wish that the price was a little lower (because they are gone so quickly,) these are the biggest, best walnuts I have found. Fresh and tasty...!

Great for squirrels!
I'm a squirrel rehabber and I ended up with two late litter orphans. At that time of year grocery stores do not carry whole nuts which baby squirrels need to learn to survive in the wild. I ordered these and they were great quality. Squirrels loved them.

Great walnuts!
When I first received and opened my nut order I was afraid they were going to be old/ spoiled as shells were darker than another brand I tried....I was pleasantly surprised how fresh and delicious they were. Would purchase again. Received in a timely manner.
