My seven year old practiced some of the things I showed her for hours which would not have happened with an instrument that was not kid friendly and playable. It is so far proving durable as we have dropped it on our hardwood floors several times which is another reason it is a great "gateway instrument" for getting kids interested in music. Also, if your children are taking piano lessons, the standard piano keyboard enables them to transfer their musical prowess to a new instrument directly. The only downside to the playability is that it does require a good amount of breath to keep the instrument sounding which makes it difficult to achieve much dynamic nuance in terms of the volume, but I can't say that this is not the case with other melodicas as well. Like I said, this is the only one I have ever played. Very glad I purchased it. It comes in a little sharp, about 445 or 446, but I think 440 is the intention. Our other instruments in the house get tuned to 440 A and it sounds fine with them. **Q: Does it sound like the one that john batiste from late show with stephen colbert plays?** A: It probably would if you could get John Batiste to play it for you, but I think his is probably a more solid instrument. this one is in tune, and plays easily, although it is hard to alter the volume. Still, the children enjoy it very much. **Q: What's the size of tube mouthpiece ?** A: 21.5 inches **Q: How does the sound and intonation compare to the pricier Hohner models?** A: I would imagine that a more expensive instrument that is better made is probably going to sound better, but I have not heard them side by side. I have a fairly keen ear for pitch, and I can tell you the intonation on this instrument is very good.
