It was ok, just ok
It was an useful book, but it seems overpriced. There are 241 pages, but the material is hardly dense and then there are photographs. All the expense seems to have gone in making a glossy book on expensive paper with high quality binding. But the content itself is not very dense. And it is most certainly not a language learning book. But I was thinking that maybe it will help understand the challenges that comes with learning a new language. So I was interested in knowing about MM Lee's language learning experience and I could say my curiosity was quenched despite the shortcomings of the book. But I had to pay the price. And what did I learn for $49 plus shipping? It is very tough to learn mandarin especially for adults plus it is very easy to forget unless you are living in a Chinese speaking environment. Apparently even the MM's grandkids do not take to it. He speaks about Beligians and Canadians having problems with bilingualism. I mean without explicitly saying it, he seems to have indicated that English is the language of the future.English is the language of the workplace in Singapore. I know that English is being taught in Chinese schools too nowadays. Imagine someone trying to learn Mandarin getting a copy of this book? What is he or she to understand? Learn enough Mandarin to teach Mandarin speakers English? That seems to be the case. The brutal honesty gets to you.
