For italic handwriting and general daily riting with unlined paper
I bought this to refine my handwriting and penmanship. I write with fountain pens (and medium italic nibs) on the occasional unlined fountain pen friendly paper. I might also use a pointed pen.Usage:You put these sheets behind the unlined paper that you write on, typically thin quality writing paper, marker paper, tracing paper or bank paper. You do not write on the underliner.UsabilityI thought this might have been an unnecessary purchase. I've been using lined paper, and also made my own using the back of a thin cutting mat (smooth surface side) for months. From experience, however, using a smooth hard plastic surface can result in a 'slippery' writing experience.MaterialThis is not a transparent OHP plastic sheet with printed lines. The underliners are actually printed on a type of matte plastic substrate. It has a fine waxed finish not too different from the surface of baking paper. It has a white semi-opaque backing.DurabilitySince it is a type of plastic substrate it is more durable than paper. It is thick enough that it holds its shape flat on a surface. No folding or curling so far. It is probably less prone to accidental tearing, but I am not going to try and fold it or tear it like paper either to be sure.DimensionsThe underliner will comfortably fit A4 and letter sizes. Sized like an ~A4+ size. You get 6 sheets with lines spaced closer or further apart. You will typically choose the sheet depending on the italic nib size you are using. Example If you are using a 1.0/1.1 mm medium italic nib, the medium sheet works best. The solid slant lines correspond to italic calligraphy slant lines about 5 degrees. I don't rely on slant lines but its good to know. If you need Spencerian/copperplate slant lines which are about 55 degrees, use the dotted slant lines, as seen in the product shots.UsageI use the Medium sheet the most, which fits most of my regular writing. The lines can help you with handwriting because it has lines that correspond (almost) to French ruled paper - or 'Seyes ruled paper', especially with the Fine version. That is something you don't get with typical 6mm-7mm lined college ruled paper. Seyes ruled paper can also be hard to see through on unlined paper at times.I like using the lines to help me practice maintaining the x-heights of my daily informal italic hand.If I were to write in an American/Copperplate Cursive hand, I would probably use the Fine sheet.ConclusionUseful not just for calligraphy but for everyday writing on unlined paper.

A great investment for beginning calligraphers!
These Underliners have been so helpful in improving my two issues with practicing calligraphy-making my letters uniform in size and maintaining the correct slant. I purchased these with the LED Copy Board Light Pad (which I love) and together they have made practicing my calligraphy more enjoyable and productive. They are well worth the money!

easily visible through standard composition paper and some graph papers
Decent underliners, easily visible through standard composition paper and some graph papers. Can also be seen fairly well through a variety of weights in printer paper. Pretty delicate though, the first set I received were creased due to improper packaging and could not be fixed, amazon sent me a replacement set and they are proving to be very useful now that I have a set that are of use to me.

not for gothic
Gothic tends to be straight up and down this has line to angle the letters. Nice product though
