I love these Classroom in a Book books, its not just reading to memory there is a lot actual hands on exercises which is how you learn and understand. This is my 3rd. book. If you want to learn anything that Adobe puts out these are the best learning aides imop.

If you are just getting started with After Effects, this is a good place to start, but I will say that some of the exercises are a bit complex to understand. If you have a good background in the Adobe Suite, you will understand this better, but if you are brand new, I would say to use this in conjunction with online beginner tutorials to help you learn.
