Still the best
The media could not be loaded. Most recent use was my heavy old army coat.I got it soaking wet then sprayed this onto it ang hung it by a radiator to dry over night. I've included a video showing how the ancient old heavy canvas coat shrugs off the water. Now out in the rain the top layer of the coat is going to soak up a little rain BUT it doesn't get through and the coat still breathes perfectly well. Also use this stuff on waterproof coats and tents that need a recoating. I've waterproofed a thick cotton bucket hat and Craghopper Kiwi trousers, all good. The trousers don't last as long because the material is very thin, moves a hell of a lot and brushes against everything.Works great on canvas trainers like Converse Allstars, confused my wife and daughter when we got caught in a downpour.Use it on all sorts of footwear and is really good for older boots (leather included) that leak slightly around the lace holes. If you're going to use on something like gaiters then you need to be really generous with it, you'll need to refresh it more often there too.I don't like plastic coats, I hate GoreTex stuff, the environmental impact of it is not justifiable for me and plastic coats are so so sweaty when soaked, yes even GoreTex. Very noisy too.You do need to recoat jackets and I prefer doing it by hand, find the washing machine method to be hit and miss. This has so so many uses. Once you've got it you'll find loads of uses for it.

WARNING - Do not pour into washing machine before starting wash!
The reason is that when you switch on a washing machine it automatically pumps out water, if you pour in the proofing it will pump that out too! This may be the reason some people find it useless. Wait until the machine starts to fill then add the proofing. I cannot find any instructions to this effect to prevent you pouring money down the drain. I cannot recommend the fabric conditioner tray as it adds conditioner to the last rinse and it will not be washed into the cotton. It does add some waterproofing to cotton canvas but not sure how well it will do in a shower.

Very good, as long as you are not expecting long rain showers.
If you are looking for something that will make cotton waterproof to a gortex level, this is not for you. But if you want something that will help shed light rain, or short bursts (and beer) this is the stuff. I use this on my fjallraven greenland jacket, and it works brilliantly as a summer jacket, if there is a risk of a shower (amd much easier than applying wax) Also treated a craghoppers polycotton work/overshirt and also great shower protection. Easy to apply in the washing machine, but don't forget to prewash with the proper gear wash from nikwax, for better results. Would recommend, if you use it as an 'I wasn't expecting rain today, but i'll be ok' kind of way.

Works well, but you have to follow the instructions!
I have used the spray variety to rain proof boot/ski bags sucessfully. The wouldn't survive being hosed down, but the bag contents have remained dry whilst travelling in rain and snow and sitting in baggage carriers in the pouring rain at the airport. Prior to treatment we have arrived to find some very soggy clothes inside.I've used the wash in variety to reproof my polycotton walking trousers very sucessully. Again they won't survive a complete downpour, but they are certainly back to being showerproof again and keep me reasonably dry when I get caught in the rain on my bike.Couple learning points we've picked up over the years of using various manufacturers proofing products:Normal washing power will breakdown the best of proofing products, make sure there's no build up in your washing machine tray or drum. Also try to make sure there is no residue on the garments you are trying to reproof either by using a specialist washing product or by giving the garment an extra rince in clean water before you start.Make sure you use the correct amount of product, we keep a liquid wash measuring ball to one side for this so we can measure accurately.Do wash at the temperature specified if possible.Always tumble dry if you can, this seems to set the product better than line drying and produces a finish that doesn't just work better, but lasts longer as well.

Canvas awning repair
I used this to repair a canvas awning. I painted it on and allowed it to dry, needed to be diluted a little first. Someone suggested soaking the item in bath, which was a no goer for something this large!! It was time consuming, but after drying it out (over our trampoline) I attemped to apply a 2nd coat, which kept being repelled!! I take that as a good sign. Not had it out in the wet since waterproofing, but am hoping this has worked. For a bit of effort and a few quid. I may have saved myself needing to buy a new awning!!

perfect product
We finally got round to waterproofing our 10 year old bell tent.I wasn't sure if this was the right stuff to use but it was absolutely brilliant. Dilute with 9 parts water and brushed on,once dry the rain just beads off the fabric.Brilliant stuff.

Not Impressed...Nikwax you let me down.
I have a cotton lightweight jacket with zero water repellancy at all....so I bought this hoping at least to get shower proof from it.I used the Wash version first, after washing out the soap tray and even running a rinse cycle beforehand just to ensure there was no detergent left in the machine as per the instructions.A couple of weeks later i got caught in a shower and sadly discovered the jacket still had zero water repellancy...I got SOAKED!So I repeated the instructions again, again carefully ensured all detergent traces were cleaned away and tried once more.....with equally lousy results.Such a shame, I had high hopes, I guess i try a different brand and see if it goes Third Time Lucky?
