The Full English Opening: Mastering the Fundamentals

It's good as far as it goes, but I was disappointed. It promises lots of discussion of themes and strategies. It doesn't deliver. Most pages are variations within variations within variations. I suppose I just don't have the patience for it anymore. I'd rather be playing chess than spending time sorting out this sort of bramble.

This book gives response to all of blacks reasonable moves. It helps the player to identify the main lines.

An up to date comprehensive work on the English opening. An enormous amount of work went into this obvious labor of love.

Old time English!

Looking forward to building up my repertoire with this book.

The author states that this is not a repetoire book in the introduction. He goes on to say that this book should give you an understanding of why moves are played in the English opening. However I found there to be an overwhelming amount of variations and sidelines for me to grasp a decent understanding of the opening. The analysis is fairly minimal and I found myself using computer analysis a lot.Perhaps this would serve well a 2000+ player as a book of variations, but club players should look elsewhere to learn the English.

Il y avait à une époque (un peu plus d'une vingtaine d'années) la Bible de l'Anglaise qui était la monographie de Bagirov.L'auteur emprunte le même chemin de sérieux en allant à l'essentiel mais avec une vue actuelle un peu plus pédagogique sans être pour autant insistante...C'est un manuel généraliste dans lequel l'auteur n'impose pas sa façon à lui de pratiquer cette ouverture.Il s'agit d'un travail de qualité, réfléchi, qui couvre les fondamentaux de l'Anglaise sans noyer le lecteur dans des variantes.Les commentaires en fin de chapitre sont très subtils, et décrivent bien l'expérience et le feeling du praticien.Les parties de référence choisies sont récentes pour décrire l'état de l'art dans la compétition actuelleBeaucoup de passages de texte expliquant les enjeux et/ou les plans en cours de variante.Bref c'est un manuel sincère qui est une base solide pour une personne qui désire jouer cette ouverture, et la laisse libre d'enrichir le champ d'investigation.
