Please Review Description. Review "Jazz Icons" offers little- or never-seen European performances by musicians you wish you'd seen. Mostly shot in black-and-white in the '60s, the fourth installment of this landmark series gives you a front-row seat at concerts by Coleman Hawkins, Jimmy Smith, Erroll Garner, Art Blakey, Art Farmer, Anita O'Day and Woody Herman. You can buy them individually ($19.99 list price) or buy them all as a box set ($119.99) and get a bonus DVD with additional performances by Smith, Garner and Hawkins. -- Boston Herald, Larry Katz, December 15, 2009"Jazz Icons" offers top-drawer DVD sets of jazz notables appearing on European and Scandinavian television from the late 1950s to mid-1970s. The new fourth series, shot in black and white, again provides scintillating visual and aural entertainment. There's organ maestro Jimmy Smith with a percolating "Got My Mojo Working." Jazz diva Anita O'Day romps through "Tea For Two" and "Green Dolphin Street." Tenor saxophone innovator Coleman Hawkins digs into the opus "Ow!" and the ballad "Lover Man." Drum dynamo Art Blakey's band with Freddie Hubbard nails the trumpeter's intense "Crisis." Piano marvel Erroll Garner delivers his trademark love song, "Misty," and the undulating "One Note Samba." A bonus DVD includes more Hawkins, Smith and Garner. -- Nj.com, Zan Stewart, December 4, 2009Also highly recommended: the latest "Jazz Icons" DVD set (Naxos/Reelin' in the Years), featuring live performances, most from the '60s, by Jimmy Smith, Coleman Hawkins, Art Farmer, Erroll Garner, Woody Herman, Art Blakey and Anita O'Day. (Discs are sold individually, as well). -- Richard Scheinin, San Jose Mercury News, December 2009

Jazz Bliss
Since I first stumbled upon the jazz icons series, I have found it necessary to satisfy the spirit of materialism within me and purchase every one. Initially, I just picked up the box sets that included jazz icons who had been transcendent for me, personally (I'm thinking Coltrane as I write this); as I made my way through all the dvds in each set, though, I was never disappointed and always transported. Having watched a high school jazz concert and being reminded of Anita O'Day's performance in Jazz On a Summer's Day, I asked the young lady if she had ever heard O'Day perform. Because she hadn't, I loaned her JOaSD; because she liked it, I purchased this set so I could loan her the O'Day disc. But first I watched it! More transcendence, and more great liner notes: engaging, informative, entertaining. Jimmy Smith's performances also blew me away! I am a Lonnie Smith fan (I searched for Drives after watching the Tribe Called Quest documentary), and being able to watch Jimmy Smith has me now searching out his music for the times my muse is sick. Again, the book that accompanies the disc was helpful in setting up what I viewed and commenting on the performances. I have only made it through those two discs because watching them made me want to go back and revisit discs from earlier sets. A great series, and one I feel good about supporting (it is easy to find these performances on youtube). If you have the ability to support the work of Reelin' In The Years Productions, I urge you to do so.

What happened to the new Volumes
This is a great great series, it makes me sad that it was not supported by big production companies and thus you can rarely find new volumes, or even Jazz Icons are being continously delayed in production. Series five was delayed a couple of times and when released, sellers like amazon did not have it. Imagine if this series was supported, how mch good quality concerts can be revived from low quality bootlegs to great quality sound and vision, through going to the source TV and working on professionally cleaning them

Jazz History at Its Best
This is the fourth in a series of must-have Jazz Icon collections focusing on the stars of the jazz world from the 1950s and 1960s. The music is wonderful and the video quality is high and so it is well worth the expense for the whole box. We offer many levels of jazz history courses at CCNY and this series has been well utilized in all those courses. They feature complete performances of important pieces in the jazz canon.
