Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of its early career, the band consisted of Armstrong, Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, their major label debut Dookie became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the United States. Green Day was widely credited as one of the key groups who popularized punk rock in the mainstream with Dookie. Since 1994, Green Day has released eight studio albums: Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), Warning (2000), American Idiot (2004), 21st Century Breakdown (2009), ¡Uno! (2012), ¡Dos! (2012), and ¡Tré! (2012). They have also released several compilations, live albums, video albums, and DVDs. The band has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Rock Album for 21st Century Breakdown. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway. The musical was nominated for three Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design.
