Receiving encouragement from Rodin, Francois Pompon produced some animal statue sculptures such as the Polar Bear shown at the 1922 Salon d'Automne. This Polar Bear in Stride Statue (l'Ours Blanc) is one of Pompon's most recognized works as a fixture in the entrance area at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. The lumbering strength of the bear's movement conveys its form, mass, and dimensionality, in a unique way but still suggestive of Rodin's earlier training. His sculpture has a simplified sophistication that would become characteristic of modern sculpture in the early 20th century. His body of work includes a series of animal statues with smooth shapes such as Owl, Brown Bear, and Partridge and others.
