Not for a guitar "virgin"
Granted, I thought it was a DVD, when it clearly stated CD.But, I don't understand how one is supposed to learn an instrument without any visuals. When you put the disc in, all you see is a row of boxes. When you click onto a box, you hear a note. That's it.As the numbers of the boxes progresses, you only hear the person playing. The book doesn't clearly show exactly where to put your hands on the guitar.I've learned flute, organ and drum music reading. I understand that some instruments have specific reading differences. But, it doesn't clearly show what particulars of reading the music mean. This is NOT a book for a 100% beginner.

Book is great!
I found an old book of "Learn and Play Guitar Book" in my classroom. I really liked the way the book progressed for young students. I looked here and of course Amazon didn't let me down. I now use this with my after school guitar students, as one of their books. The book provides many examples of music using the chords they begin with. The book uses chords for children: using the 3-4 strings that are higher in pitch.I took off a star because the CD goes too fast and my students get frustrated. If they would slow the tempo down about 1/2, the disc would be usable. And, they don't tell you what number they're on, you have to count carefully to get to the correct recording. The ONE thing useful about the CD is the first track: tuning. They do play that in a slower tempo giving students a chance to tune.

A little boring
My son is 11.The book is a little boring and doesn't get you playing right away.I think at his age with, zero skills, he would have preffered a dvd.

This really wasn't all that it was cracked up to ...
This really wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Guitar is really a complex instrument and I didn't find that this set offered enough to teach a novice how to play.

I like the way the book is bond and lies open ...
Ordered for my granddaughter to learn to play her first real guitar, she seems to be doing extremely well. I like the way the book is bond and lies open for her to see. The CD is an added bonus. It was a great value and I believe she will do well with it.
