History of Tipu Sultan

This is a well-researched book. Certainly among the best on Tipu Sultan. The author researched and wrote this book drawing from various primary sources at a time when there was no internet. The author's analysis and observations using the sources is as relevant today as it was when it was first written, over 70 years ago. Much recommended.

An important work citing a number of primary sources. The author rightly states that Tipu's life should not been through the prism of nationalism and he should not beprojected as a freedeom fighter. However, his justification of Tipu's actions, especially, persecution and forced conversion of Hindus and Christians is not valid.The same goes for his invitation to foreign powers to enter India and come down South to free him from the English yoke. Sadly, Tipu was less mindful of local language and culture. So the absence of Kannada and the desire to impose Islamic culture. He was vengeful to adversaries. Hence, the abduction of women from the ruling families of Nagund and Coorg. However, it should be pointed out that as much (and possibly more) havoc was inflicted by the Marathas on Karanaka. For all that is said and done, this book deserves to be read with critical scrutiny.
