An Enchanting Tale
When H. Rider Haggard wrote this novel in 1886, it was in the context of Europe's awakening to colonial possibilities on "the Dark Continent". Africa at the time was like an ink blot into which Haggard gazed and perceived manifold mysteries. Haggard's ink blot told him of a vanished, once mighty civilization, Kor, now much degraded. In this almost inaccessible region reigned She, an ageless woman who had lived over 2000 years. Never growing old, She awaited the return of her long-lost true love, Kallikrates. The original had tragically died, but his descendants passed on, from father to son, the legend of She. At last, one of the descendants, Leo, decides to embark on the perilous journey to Kor, in search of She. Accompanying Leo are his guardian, Ludwig Horace Holly, and a manservant, Job. An enchanting tale of true lovers re-uniting unfolds, though it does not end "happily ever after". I enjoyed She, however this edition of Haggard's novel is hampered by print which ought to be larger and a lack of illustrations. The tale deserves better treatment and hence this edition does not receive the full 5 stars.

She
I read this book when I was in grade school and I saw this book again while scrolling Amazon's book section. So I thought I'd read it again. It has and always will be a good story. If one can get past the flowery language and the ye's and thou's, The gist is that when this little boy's father died, he was left a chest that could only be opened when he became 21. In the meantime his guardian followed the dead fathers instructions that this child would be educated and well versed in Arabic, Greek and Latin. After his schooling, they then leave on this quest that is revealed to them when they open the chest. Their jungle adventures are so amazing that if it weren't in a book, they would have never lived. As for the rest of the story, you'll just have to read it yourself.

Decent Haggard Read, but Not Great
This is not my first Haggard novel, but I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the others (like King Solomon's Mines). The beginning of the book is interesting, with the whole back story of the quest, but also got bogged down by providing pages and pages of Greek that modern readers can't read. To be honest, the first 30 percent of the book is pretty draggy. However, the adventure part of the story is what you expect from a Haggard novel - intrepid white men traveling into a place where none have been seen for much time. Ayesha (the "She" of the title) is interesting and sinister, but very what the author's time period would consider "feminine".This Kindle version has no sketches (not sure if it is supposed to, but I see the mention in other formats) and is well-edited.

Classic but dated
I know it is a classic. I know you have to take into account the era in which it was written. It is well paced and wraps up nicely. But it was just a little much for me.

Poetic memoir from a remarkable woman.
Eve Hoffman, was called "A Remarkable Woman" by her alma mater, Smith College. And indeed she is. In SHE we are blessed to share in her poetic memoir in which the verse sings and to my mind the topic is LOVE;in all its forms. Children, mates, family, nature. The real gift for me was the last poem "CODA."Oh Lordof births and beheadings(for if you are there, you must be God of both)"That parenthetical has done it for me. Read SHE and see what it does for you.

Lots of lore
Another tough read but it compels a reader to continue the journey with Holly, the beloved Baboon. Whether any of this is based in genuine history, I did not entertain looking up. I simply want to believe that there really is a tribe of potentially cannibalistic people with customs that include hot potting and female choice as the rule!

Dissppointing.
No, I was disappointed in the book. I got tired of it and stopped reading. I really regret loosing the ability to order books on my Kindle store. If I read about or was interested in an author I could type in the authors name and get a selection of their books to consider. Using the Kindle app on Amazon is annoying with selections limited to Amazons recommendations. I have started too many disappointing books on their suggestions.

This is a great story, everyone should read it.
I have seen many films made of the storyline of this book but none of them do the book justice. It is a great story and although it was written many years ago now it is such a good premise that it transcends time. As adventure stories go, it is the tops.

A Great Read!
I read "She" for the first time many years ago and was delighted with it. More than 50 years have elapsed since that time,so(partly stimulated by nostalgia) I decided to give it another try. The edition you sent was neat, clear and convenient. I was NOTdisappointed. The product and your promptness in sending it to me were both excellent and much appreciated. Thank you verymuch . . .

Terrible Kindle text. I compared against the original and a lot of it is gibberish. Demanded a refund.
