Q: Just bought this and it's only holding a charge for about 2 minutes of use? Is this normal? Is there something wrong with the battery?

I’ve had this and have used it regularly for several years. Until recently I could vacuum steadily for 30-45 minutes on a charge. I never let it just sit on the charger but would charge it either overnight or for a number of hours before using it. It was great for a long time. Now it runs for just a couple minutes then quits but I can get the power back for more time almost immediately. Irritating, but it got the whole car cleaned before a trip last week. I’d hoped the lithium ion battery was replaceable but have not found that to be the case for this older model. I would - probably will have to - buy Black & Decker again.

Q: How many volts is this?

As Someone else mentioned, while this vacuum looks and smells and is even labeled the same as the previous version, it is not, including the Voltage. We had the previous version which was indeed 16V Lithium, and we loved it. Got a lot of use out of it and our young kids who were happy to help clean up with it; for about two years, when it died, just wouldn’t start anymore;So I ordered this one, which I thought to be a the same product, However, One of the changes in the design is that this vacuum now requires to be plugged in to be recharged, whereas the previous version had a charging base - you would just set it upright on the base and it would charge. Easy as pie, even for the kids. Based on the drama of endless empty personal devices, I knew this version was going to be a problem. I thought that a likely problem with the old one might be low battery cells and that I could replace them with cells from the “new” model. I opened the vacuum to get to the battery. It is clear that battery replacement is not intended to be a consumer activity. The old unit had 4 cells each measuring approx. 4 Volts, which makes sense for a 16V rating(4x4V). The new vacuum, however, had only 3 cells and each measured 3.5V So I concluded that the problem with the old vacuum was unlikely to be with the battery, as each cell measured the same and together would provide the rated 16 Volts. Additionally, it appears that the new vacuum has a significant power reduction, at around 9 to 10 VOLTS as others have answered. (3.5V per Cell X 3 cells. I strongly share the comment that this should be clearly labeled on everything for an effective comparison

Q: Is the suction strong enough to pick up cat litter?

It will pick up litter. And then when you turn it off and hold it spout-down to hang it up, all the kitty litter falls out onto the floor. This thing is useless.

Q: Has the lack of charging issue been resolved for 2017?

Not sure as have not owned previous model. I can tell you I can clean two cars, probably fifteen minutes on one charge without loosing suction.
