It's not me it's the instrument - to bypass all my waffle skip to last 9 words in caps ; D
Straight out the box (the very well designed box) this whistle is very easy to play, and sounds great. I'd like to say it was my playing but the fact is this instrument sounds good even when played by a beginner. The price of around £20 was well worth the extra compared to the less expensive Clarke and Generation whistles I've tried., For me the others have a different 'tone' which is not inferior but they require more skill to get the best from them. with this Dixon I don't need to 'whisper' softly for the low notes and then blow really hard for the high notes. The tuning seems to work like this. You pull the metal bit with holes in out of the plastic bit that you blow into. The further you pull the metal bit out the flatter the notes. I've heard whistle tones described as 'chiffy' 'breathy' 'warm' and 'bright'. Subjective as describing tone could be, I would describe this one as between warm and bright and pleasantly breathy. BEGINNER FRIENDLY, GOOD VALUE, WELL MADE, GREAT SOUNDING INSTRUMENT.

This is a nicely made instrument cut from a straight peice of pipe ...
This is a nicely made instrument cut from a straight peice of pipe not folded and soldered like some cheap ones. Im a complete novice player so unable to comment on value for money as an instrument but have thus far managed to get a reasonable sound of it.

Disappointing
Really disappointed with this - arrived with a nick at the base of the mouthpiece, and just sounds really odd to play - like the holes aren't in the right place, particularly when playing "F". Not like any previous tin whistle I've owned. I have since bought an old trusted cheapy Feadóg, and comparing the two directly I can hear that the Dixon has clearly been incorrectly cut out. A shame as it has a sweet tone and a nice look / feel.

paying more didn't get what I wanted
am disappointed - the reviews (apart from 1) all said it was a clear lovely tone, but I don't get that at all - quite hard to transition between pitches without it cracking, and high notes sound very rough. I wish I'd listened to the 1* review... like them I am going to buy a cheap and cheerful one and compare the two.

Love this!
Got started straight away as I bought some music to go with it. I played a Recorder and the Tenor recorder at school and I can read Music so I started with scales and the sound is lovely. I haven't found it difficult to get the high notes as a beginner. I think this is because the instrument is made well. I would say this product is above beginner range products and it was worth paying extra to get a nice sound. I played Violin to grade 7 and singing to grade 7 so I know when a Musical instrument sounds good. It certainly isn't the out of tune squeekyness that I remember from playing plastic recorders at school. I haven't needed to tune it yet using the head piece and the fact that you can tune it is great. I look forward to happy hours learning.

Easy to play
I am a very occasional player. This is not my first instrument so I only pick it up every now and than. With other whistles I have tried that is a problem in that it takes a while to get used to them. With this one, no problem. It is very easy to play and in particular I can slip up to the upper octave very easily without any conscious effort. Easy on the breath as well

but I found this whistle more comfortable to play with
If only I knew a bout this site earlier... Got a tin whistle personally made by a british guy living in America and paid nearly 3 times the price of this whistle, but I found this whistle more comfortable to play with...can't seem to put it down now... It was nicely packed with a durable tubing and another package to house the whistle which is really nicely done... This whistle will be with me wherever i go now and hopefully will bring pleasure to my music playing for many years to come.......but hang one....I think I'll buy another one.....Hmmm.. decisions, decisions....
