The price initially gave me pause, but I have no regrets in purchasing this. This could be characterized as a masterpiece. Most if not all of the positions involve some type of unusual circumstances where one side can do better than you might expect at first glance, but I still found myself having to clear out the cobwebs on the positional handling of various types of endgames in order to rule out certain lines or address certain deficiencies in my endgame understanding. In this regard, I am learning a lot as I go through this. Many of these remind me of the sometimes subtle distinction between tactical and positional play. These are not always tactics in the traditional sense of involving checks, captures, and threats, but they are certainly forcing lines. But there is a lot of subtlety. This is certainly not a book for folks who do not already have some understanding of basic chess endings. For example, you need to know a fair amount already about basic K+P vs K+P endgames, although you can use this as I have to shore up deficiencies.

A strength of this book is the very limited use of variations, if they are used at all.
This is the best book for learning endgames if you’re not a grandmaster. I have read three of the major endgame books - by Fine, Keres, Dvoretsky - and this Perlo gem was the most entertaining and easiest to remember.

This is excellent
I'm only 20 problems into 1400 total but I can already see that this is going to be one of my favorite endgame books.

Love The Endgame!
For anybody who loves solving endgames this is one of the Best Books ever written by an experienced Dutch Correspondence Grandmaster Late Van Perlo! It contains well over 1400 examples and will give the reader many hours of joy and will test the reader's intellectual abilities at analyzing and calculating variations! As the 3rd World Chess Champion Capablanca famous quote on being asked on how to improve at chess "Know The Endgame", I believe that for any player to wishes to improve his calculating abilities, this book will help at solving endgames tactically! The only other book which can be termed as one of the Best Endgame Books ever written is Late Mark Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual! Enjoy Chess? Love The Endgame!!!!

Read carefully....Endgame TACTICS
I am currently rated somewhat around 1900 ELO and bought this book to better my endgame skills. Honestly this book does not help to achieve this goal, as it's a great summary of different tactical shots and blunders which occured in the endgame play of different grandmaster games, but it does not provide you with any systematic input how to avoid these blunders in your own games. Mainly this is because the book just deals with tactical shots and these are more or less the result of inaccurate play by your opponent and not a result of your own strategic ideas.I would recommend the endgame manuals of Karsten Müller and Dvoretzky, which give you advices "how to win an aleady won endgame" over a book which shows you thousants of examples how you can somehow avoid a loss by tricking yourself out of a lost.position or sneak a draw by exploiting a bluder of your opponent.
