good product.
well made, solid, wide stance is stable. assembly took me 1.5-2 hours. They try to make it clear sequentially what to do. Do not try to "wing it". Despite some of prior posts about poor instructions, I think the one I got showed they tried hard to make it clear with references to specific bolts/pictures , but still fairly complex. Set your bolts up in groups of size and length before starting. This one was fully unassembled, and may also come as "partially assembled" which would make your day easier. This is the second one I bought, and now has a horizontal bar on back to support on the ground rather than two feet on the model from three years ago. That one runs well still. Anti-rust spray at end of season, and regular rinsing after use should make it last a long time. I have no plans for spreading salt and this should help.I secured the screen in the hopper to a 9" length of steel 1/16" cable tether to be sure it does not get lost, or blow off if transporting on top of car. This one shows an effort at improved design. Spread rate is clearly given if you read the instructions and follow the advice, walking pace, and particle size, etc. I added a star lock washer under the knob that secures the flow setting handle to prevent movement once it is set for the day.

Buyer Beware!
Assembly instructions did not match the included hardware. Called Customer Support and was told the hardware included had been changed and the instructions included were for the older model, but they could email me the updated instructions!! Where's the quality control?? What's the point in including outdated assembly instructions?! After downloading the updated instructions, I started assembly. 2 different bolts snapped with simple tightening...leads me to believe hardware is inferior...packed the whole thing up and returning for a refund. I always try to buy Made in USA products but this was quite a disappointment.

Excellent spreader; difficult to assemble.
Excellent quality with large hopper and larger, easy rolling wheels. Assembly instructions were difficult to follow. Had to use common sense, experience and luck to put it together. Took about 3 hours. First use was exactly as expected and needed!

beefy and substantial, but does not work as well as hoped for
This is a very nice spreader. Like others say, it takes some time to assemble, but that was fun. A few things to know before buying: 1) its big, and that's great because it holds two or three bags which I need for my yard. 2) One of the tires does not hold air more than a week. So i have to refill each use. 3) Like nearly all spreaders, it broadcasts heavy to one side and lighter on the other. I was hoping and expecting it to be more uniform. Its a good product, and same as i've seen in other stores (assembled). Great price on Amazon.

Big and Sturdy
Compared to the box store offerings, this ol boy's a HOG ( Big ) ! Installation was no big deal but I can see how some folks might find it to be a little more challenging. I added washers in several locations that should have them that Earthway doesn't include. Nobody at Earthway's gonna earn the Nobel Prize for Design and Engineering here but it's a pretty good spreader for pellet fertilizer as it was designed and sold for. Important Note! This unit does have the SSC "SideSpred-Control" A very important feature that when engaged it only allows product to be spread forward and to the right ahead of your path leaving the left side closed off for sidewalks and driveways.I did find one Con. The linkage between the pivot plate and the shut off plate assembly needs to be redesigned. The linkage walks it's self out of the shut off plate and falls to the ground. I will drill a hole and put a cotter pin in it to make it work. The Earthway 2170 is a pretty good, heavier duty spreader but it was designed and manufactured on a budget.Update: Did my second 40 lbs bag of natural pellet fertilizer and I can't tell you how nice it is to be able to put the whole bag of fertilizer in the hopper. Pour the bag in and go! Next off, I've got to say that it is such an improvement to be working with a nice, sturdy spreader rather than one of those fragile, light weight, box store offerings. The Earthway 2170 spreader has a nice weight and sturdy feel. Keep in mind you'll need a bigger space in your garden shed for this larger spreader.

Finally!
Finally a spreader that actually works. I've owned three of the more commonly available spreaders from Home Depot / Lowes. I first bought the cheapest one at about $40 - junk. Upgraded to a $60 tow model - junk that repeatedly flipped over. Upgraded again to a $70 push type - still junk. The cheap ones are very hard to push, and frequently leaked. Finally stepped up and bought one of these Earthway 2170's. What a great product. In a whole different league than the typical HD/Lowes stuff. Of course it's also triple the price - but worth it if you have a good sized yard. Spread patter was terrific, open/close lever works flawlessly, huge tires make pushing a full spreader around relatively easy. Much easier to push this one around with a full 80 lbs than it was to push the cheap ones around with 40lbs. This thing just plain works and finally makes fertilizing a vaguely fun chore. Of course it kills me that I paid $190 last week for this thing and it's listed as $163 today - arrgghhh. As far as assembly, I just don't see what was so tough about assembling it. If you can't tell a 1 3/4 inch bolt from a 2 1/4 inch bolt - just simply measure it. It is easy to mix them up. It's simply not that hard to put together. Took me a leisurely 30-40 minutes while watching TV one evening to unbox and assemble (could have done it in 15 minutes if I focused/tried). Only needed a Phillip's head screw driver and two small wrenches. A ratchet wrench of some sort would make the process a little faster, but not required.
