This is a very impressive looking piece of metal. It's very smooth and feels good in the hands.I'm in my late 60s and find some canal locks difficult to operate because the mechanisms are so stiff. When I saw this windlass with the long throw handle and greater leverage, I thought it would make things easier for me and I was right!A word of caution though. When operating a paddle mechanism that is on the lock GATE rather than on the GROUND beside the lock, you have to be aware that the longer handle puts your fingers very close to the lock balance beam at the bottom of its stroke. I kind of saw that coming and as a consequence was cautious from the start. As it happens it has not caused any problems but as on some canals every lock seems to be slightly different, I would recomend caution.It is certainly worth having one of these items with me when I'm lockwheeling even if only to get the mechanism moving from its "at rest" position. The first turn is always the hardest!!!!

Purchased the longer version due to stiff locks on the canal network.. The extra length makes operating stiff lock mechanisms much easier. Unbelievable really what such a small difference makes.

Only one size cannot be used on every canal lock
