It gives you a good idea of what to expect but it could offer more resource references.

Waste of money
This book contains less info about a MMO than the typical manual a player gets for a RPG. If you get World of Warcraft or Guild Wars, it will contain much more detailed info that just quick paragraphs that does not teach you "how to balance your game" nor how to create a design document. I received the book, and I am surprised Amazon accepted a book called "Make Your Own MMORPG" with a only 3 paragraphs of text for how to balance a MMO. If you expect formulas, design tips for MMO forget about this book.

Great little book
Great book. A lot of information. Very simple and easy to understand. If you are advanced and already have knowledge on this topic you may want to look for more advanced resources. But for a beginner this book gives you a very good breakdown of what you need to know.

false description provided by the author
This doesnt teach you anything about making your own mmorpg. The author made a text based online browser game and feels it is the same thing as an mmorpg. Better off taking a course whether online or at a college and grabbing many books on the mathematics and principles of game engine development. Because without an engine to run your idea you have no game

This is a handy little book.
My husband is a programmer and is interested in game design, so he and I decided to check out this book together. Here is a collection of our thoughts. If you aspire to be a first-time MMORPG designer, this book is a great place to start. Have you ever wished for an end-to-end outline of the game development lifecycle? Certainly there are other available resources that are more generic in nature, but this book gives a thorough explanation of all the steps you will need to take in the life-cycle of developing and releasing an MMORPG.Keep in mind the book is primarily intended for the individual first-time designer. Don't expect to find a detailed, step-by-step guide for creating the next block-buster to blow away the competition. The author's intent is to help an individual designer get a foot in the door. However, the beauty of the book is that you COULD follow this outline to create anywhere from the most basic game (as recommended by the author for first-timers) to the grand champion of all MMORPG's (though you would need a corporate-style budget and staff to do the latter! ;^| ).The book was fairly easy to follow and full of good tips and suggestions. The author even makes the point to tell you at the start of each chapter how much work you can expect to do for the tasks therein. Though it will be up to you to actually determine all the finest details of the game you design, this book contains a detailed list of each individual component you will need to have in place. From the design, documentation and building of your game, to the project management, marketing and customer/community support systems you will need - each piece of the puzzle is discussed and includes suggestions and examples. On top of all this, the author even provides a website for additional help as well as many suggestions for the tools and resources you will need to utilize along the way.I certainly recommend using this book as a guide to designing MMORPG's. You can use it to learn and create your first as an individual game designer... and you can continue to use it as the outline of any future project you undergo, no matter how epic the level of your ambition.

Great place to begin
Well written book that will help you take the idea floating around in your head and make it a reality!!! Every aspect necessary for a well rounded mmorpg is covered in the book, and just scanning the table of contents will get your mind racing to areas you may have overlooked. The book won't give you an idea for the next great mmorpg, but will help your vision come to life!!!

Well done.
Heard of this book and soon after it got sent to a teenager who is into various kinds of computer games, including educational ones. Thought it might possibly become part of his home-schooling education. The book is well-written in an interesting, user-friendly [kind of conversational] manner. Well done, Aaron.

Best yet!
This is the best book I have yet read on how to make an MMORPG! I found it easy to understand and very helpful in how the format was laid out! Easy to read and answered all the questions I had. Highly recommend.

I do not recommend this book
Title misleading, tell you obvious steps on how to plan your approach to making a MMORPG. The word "Build" should be taken out of title and the word Run should also be replaced by Administer. I do not recommend this book.
