Yes but I gotta say, I was taught that it was due to the break in the earths magnetic field. You are not locating a certain pipe. You are simply picking up the trench where a utility has been buried and digging into the earth has broken the magnetic field in the earth. Just as an underground lake or an oilfield. My father found water wells and large oil fields. He would only use the fork of a cherry tree branch. This is what I have been taught and I have seen many people who didn’t believe.
