Midnight

I love the setting and time for Midnight by Beverly Jenkins. The setting is Boston. The time is the Eighteenth century. Britain was at war with the Patriots. Men and women were exhausted with the hands of the monarchy always on top of their heads. The Patriots wanted freedom. Interweaved in the story and a big part of the novel, Midnight by Beverly Jenkins is the lives of Black slaves and freed slaves. These Black men wanted to fight with the colonists. However, the colonists had a hard time seeing the men separate from their color. In other words, did a Black man have sense enough to understand strategies of warfare and also, could a Black man with a bayonet remain loyal to his captors? Finally, Black men would fight in the war. This is the period when we meet Crispus Attucks. He was a Black man on the Rebel side who was murdered by the Lobsterbacks.The novel by Beverly Jenkins is full of American History. However, like any other history people are living their daily lives or doing something extraordinary. They continue to fall in love and out of love. They also continue to have babies. They continue to grow old and die natural deaths while soldiers are all around them planning ways to pursue what they would call freedom. With all of their talks about freedom the soon to be known as Americans did not see the Black man as equeal.Faith is a lady who does the extraordinary in dangerous ways. She is a Tory by birth because her father is a Tory. However, she becomes a Patriot in her thought processes. She becomes a spy. She takes messages back and forth to the Patriots about the movements of the British. Her life is always in danger. I liked her because the courage she displayed in order to save the lives of the Sons of Liberty and other men in the war is fascinating. Her undercover name is Midnight. As I read, I was reminded that to stand up for what is right always takes a brave heart and a person willing to risk their lives for another person's safety.Throughout the story I saw her father turn from bad to worse. Finally, I think he had completely lost his senses. It struck me that for personal love interest or love of country, there must, at times, come a parting of ways between those whom we are related to by blood. This happened in Faith's life.It is horribly sad to read about the relationship with her father. To think a parent would just use a child for their lifestyle and desires is beyond despicable. When he throws her out on the streets leaving her to die, I wanted to cry. However, I am aware some children, in our day and time, are not in their homes because of relationship problems with their parents.So even though the novel takes place Pre Revolutionary war human nature doesn't change much. I got this book in the mail yesterday and I started and finished it today and I'm halfway through it again. I think that the cover of this novel is by far the best cover out of all her novels. The model on the cover is how I imagined Faith looked.This the 14th novel of Beverly Jenkins I've read since I started reading her books in mid November 2014 and this is now my third favorite novel of hers, and Nicholas and Faith are now my favorite couple. I loved loved loved the setting in this book. The story line was filled with the mystery and history I have come love in BJ's novels. Reading about the revolutionary war era was so interesting. I placed myself there the whole time I was reading the book. I also liked the fact that this book was a bit different than her other novels. I loved loved loved Nicholas Grey and Faith Kingston. Faith's and Nicholas both stole my heart. And I felt for Faith's plight more than any other heroine in BJ's novels. Here she is essentially being enslaved by her own father! Her character reminded a bit of Zahra's character in Through the Storm. I read a few negative comments on this book and I saw someone say that the ending seemed rushed, but I don't agree. I enjoyed the ending I just wished it didn't end. This book was well written and so vivid and descriptive. Also it was a plus to see Dominic LeVeq had a part in the story as well. A true must read

I fell in love with Black western romance because of Beverly Jenkins' books. One of the first I had the pleasure of reading was The Taming of Jesse Rose. I then began to search for other books written by Mrs. Jenkins and would be mesmerized when reading them. Her books contain rich historical facts that you may not know unless you had read certain historical sources. I love how her books are sometimes intertwined in that one can be a continuation of another with certain characters highlighted so you learn more of that character's story. Midnight had me so proud of those men and women who fought for social justice in that time. Midnight also shows the dangers for standing up for freedom and liberty for all. I love the characters in this book. Beverly Jenkins brings to life characters with such integrity and also some with questionable integrity. I can say so much about this book and all the others I have read, but suffice it to say that Beverly Jenkins is one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend her books.

I absolutely loved reading this story about Faith and Nicholas!!! Despite it all their loved prevailed. Don't want to spoil the story😉

This book was a breathe of fresh air. It is historical and is a sweet & tender love story. I didn't want the book to end. I loved Before the Dawn written by Beverly Jenkins but this one is now my favorite. Faith reminds me of Cinderella and Nicholas is a handsome yet wounded prince who hasn't allowed the challenges of life to hold him back from finding love with the beautiful, clever, kindhearted and extremely hard working Faith.

Another outstanding book. As always Ms. Jenkins entertains as well as educates. Although some parts of the story were predictable it was no less every bit as exciting and simulating as I've come to expect. Even though this is a rather thick book (over 300 pages), it is a very quick read. The story hooks you and pulls you along. I've said it before I would have loved having Ms. J as my history teacher. She makes history come alive and has you thirsting for more. Faith and Nick were perfectly matched for each other. The only thing I would have changed to this book is I would have had more of Lady Midnight. I wanted Faith to do more espionage then she did. I could have seen her working as a housekeeper in on of the Tory's homes or houses where the British officers were staying and her handing off information to Nick or Prince. I'm also still wondering if Elizabeth really was with child, so may question not enough answers, maybe it will be told in the next story
