I want to buy it as a gift because my husband lift weights and he has weak wrist. Would this be a good gift?

In my opinion, these grips are the best on the market. Not only are they incredibly durable but they grip lifting bars like glue so less wrist strength is required. You can pull weight without having to grip so hard.

is the reg/large has bigger and longer palm piece than small?

Hello. The sizing only refers to the wrist wrap. The palm piece is the same length on every size.

Can these straps be effectively used for deadlifts as well as bench pressing?

Absolutely! Vera's grips have taken the hassle out of heavy deadlift and lateral chest pulls. The grips grab the bar without hassle like my straps. For bench or other push motion lifts work well! This is why I have bought my son and then a friend who is a powerlifter and High School weight lifting coach.

is it best to size up or down? My wrist is 6" but I'm not sure if I should do x-small or small?

According to the Versa Gripps website, the only difference in the sizes is the length of the strap around your wrist. If you order a size that is too big, then the wrist strap will be too long and the hook & loop will not adequately align. I think you are probably fine with either size.
