Recommended for anyone who loves marine animals or wildlife
Terrie tells a captivating story about KP2, the seal who got abandoned by his mother at birth and later transformed himself into a people-loving seal celebrity.Stories about KP2's rescue and vets becoming surrogate mothers, teaching the baby seal how to eat, were very touching. I loved how KP2 initially struggled with learning how to swim, but quickly became a natural surfer when a pink boogie board arrived! Those were just the beginnings of the adventure facing KP2 and Terrie Williams, the author and scientist who took care of him. With utmost honesty, Terrie bares her emotions and shares insight into her scientific research of this highly endangered seal. Her perspective on being a female scientist in a male dominated field is an encouraging read for any girls and women wanting to pursue a career in science.Terrie's dedication to saving endangered animals is admirable. This book is a great behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to save a species. I'd recommend it for anyone who loves marine animals or wildlife in general.

this is great! I might be biased since she is currently ...
I have not finished reading it yet, but so far, this is great! I might be biased since she is currently my professor, but honestly, it is interesting to read her thoughts in a book because in those moments, I don't see my professor that I enjoy listening to, but I see a person with an amazing story to tell. She is quite gifted. Today (5/5) is actually her birthday, so in that regards, HAPPY BIRTHDAY PROFESSOR WILLIAMS! Thanks for writing a book where I get to understand you better :)

A fun read, and educational too!
The Odyssey of KP2 is short, sweet, and educational to boot. The book is both heartwarming story of one Hawaiian Monk seal's amazing journey, and no-nonsense description of the life of a marine mammal researcher. Author Terrie M. Williams doesn't pull any punches in describing the harrowing life of a baby monk seal, and in describing her own scientist's view of the potential for extinction of this species, and her "just the facts" job as a researcher. And oppositely, she is just as warm as she relates succumbing to the charms of this particular seal's personality. If Ms. Williams ever writes a sequel, I will be the first to purchase!

Non-fiction That Reads Like a Good Story
I am enjoying reading this book at this time. I find it informational, humorous, scientific (but stated in plain English), and compelling. I appreciate the author's professionalism and love for animals. Though I am just half-way through the book, I am rooting for the author to forgo her hesitancy to pet this pup. I understand her scientific reasons for not doing so, but I believe this little seal, who so untypically relates to humans, will win out in the end. (He won her over mentally from day one.)

Heart-wrenching yet hopeful
Saving an endangered marine species means fighting fishing interests, gov. bureaucracy, local uproar, and fund-raising battles. All of that is described in this book, along with the fun of caring for a curious seal. If you care about marine conservation, this is a must-read.

A story that needs to be told
Dr. Terrie does and excellent job writing the story of this one orphaned Hawaiian monk seal. More importantly she shares the struggles the entire species faces and all the controversy behind the struggle to help this species survive. Those folks who have been a part of this struggle have been working very hard to raise awareness.... and here with the story of our beloved KP2 Dr. Terrie documents his story that is good enough for a movie. On behalf of all the volunteer who are out there day after day, we appreciate all of Dr. Terrie's work in the lab and in her writings.

Thought provoking, tearful and funny.
This is a delicately written book regarding the life of an abandoned seal, KP2. You follow his trials, and the trials and pitfalls of the marine biologist trying to save his species. You laugh along with KP2 exploits with the natives of his land and cry when these same natives want him dead for stealing their fish. A journey of laughter, and tears, and after it leaves you with an understanding of how humans are selfish when it comes to other species, and a lonely few are doing their best to educate the ones who do not really want to be educated and prefer their selfish lives. KP2 and his species along with other species need to be protected from the selfish humans that are the majority.
