Awesome
This book is by far one of the best I have read. I enjoy humor embedded into education; it creates an environment that is easy to learn from.Cadenhead uses wit and nerdy movie/book references to engage his audience. Some of the code you write is funny. The book is very in-depth on the specifics behind every line of code you write, without being boring or overly technical. Often, when I read a tutorial on how to do something, the instructions are present, but the concept of why something is being done is not covered. Cadenhead provides the student with the reasons of your code, statements, logic, etc.Very impressed. Was concerned this book would be like may others-boring, hard to follow and just something I didn't stick with.

Beginner? Look no further... seriously.
This book is perfect. I tried another beginning java book hoping that it would be friendly to someone who was relatively new to coding, and it was a disaster. What you have to watch out for if you're a beginner is a book that is way too heavy on the jargon. A beginner isn't ready for all that. This book treats each subject as if you were stupid, but that actually helps a lot. An added plus is the humor that Sam uses... talk about an ice breaker. You feel comfortable reading it and comfortable coding. An added bonus is that you are also learning how to use an IED... that's something not found in other beginner books. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in learning to code.

good for learning java
Relearning java has been a challenge for me I never really cared in college now I see everything runs on java. It has helped me relearn with confidence. However the reason for the 4 stars I wish he would have put more comments in the code. I have it on an e book and the formatting does get off some but of you go to the books website you see all code in readable format. However some of the lessons took linger than an hour for me. I'm going through all code that he provides and adding comments for my reference is only reason I have gone longer than an hour. I really like that he teaches through Netbeans that has always been my favorite ide.

SamsTeachYourself + Rodgers Cadenhead = AWESOME
This book is excellent. Examples are very easy to follow and make learning Java fun and easy. The chapters are short and compact making the book flow much easier, it always make me want to read "just one more chapter" before bed. Cadenhead injects some humor into the book that doesn't retract from the information, rather it breaks up the monotony that sometimes comes from learning a new computer language. I had a background in VB, XML, and SQL before this book and it fits in just perfectly, however someone totally new to programming will also find this book a joy to read.

Not bad. Not good!
This book on Java was not bad nor good. I took away one star for the way the material was presented and explained. Even though I love programming, I couldn't really spend long reading sessions with this one because it was a little boring at times. I took away another star because of the typos and mistakes discovered through some of the chapters and exercises. Some exercise solutions found on the book's website also had some bugs in the code. Some of the links on the book's website were even broken. There is a great book on Java called "Head First Java". I purchased it after finishing this one. Even though it's somewhat old, I still strongly recommend it. I already started reading and it looks like it's going to be fun.

I really liked this book
I really liked this book. Why en I started reading it I knew nothing at all about Java or using it to write programs. It was easy to read through (although it definitely took me way more than 24 hours to read it and work through the examples). Between this book and a little extra research time online I can now write some basic programs that I use to automate tasks at work. Maybe not the most in-depth book out there but a great starting point to introduce you to programming in Java.

Too much fluff, bad jokes, unrelated tangents
Pros:- good graphics/screenshots- good grammar- short chapters that actually do take about 1 hour.Cons: Too many sections are wasted on weak jokes (the author must have thought he was funny) and completely unrelated Q&A topics. Here are some examples with page numbers:- Page 27: Q&A #5. The question is "How can I visit Antarctica?". This is a pointless question to include in this book on Java. There is no previous reference to Antarctica, so its a complete waste of time/energy/resources. The joke continues with an actual answer that is 5 paragraphs long.- Page 41: The section titled "Running Java on Your Phone" detours about a mobile game named "Angry Birds" and the author goes on a tangent about wasting time playing that game.- Page 43: Q&A #3. The question is "What's a Chris Steak House, and why does Ruth have one?" It is foolish to have that question in this book. The author wastes 4 paragraphs answering that question. This book is a bad joke and a waste of time and money. Glad I bought it cheap and used, at least. Given that this "24-hour" book is about 427 pages, I guesstimate that if all the jokes were removed and the content reorganized, then it'd be 200 pages.

It's a great refresher course and an introduction to Java programming for ...
It's a great refresher course and an introduction to Java programming for complete beginners as well. It has clear concise examples, code that works, instructions for setting up the development environment. It uses the NetBeans development environment. It is a good precursor to Learning and implementing enterprise solutions that are more complex.
