what's the difference between cam and non-cam type...first time buyer

The cam type have a lever action "cam" that pull the chain tighter around the tire. The non-cam have a hook that lets you hook each side of the chain around the tire. So definitely use the rubber tightener.These chains work really well. I purposely got them to be able to pull a large snowmobile trailer out of a really steep road that is not plowed. Only use one set on my back tires and they work perfectly. With the chain tightener they fit snug, so I actually drive a couple of miles down the road without any fear of a chain loosening and then swinging or damaging my truck.
