Brilliance still shining, sixteen years on.
Dynasty Warriors 2 is still a fantastic experience sixteen years on from its release, the series in its entirety is brilliant and this game is no exception. I re-bought it after selling my old copy previously just because I wanted to relive my childhood again and this game has certainly brought the nostalgia and memories flooding back to me.TL;DR:Although it is now sixteen years since its release, it's still a fantastic game and if you're a fan of the series or a person who loves collecting older games then this should be going straight into your basket.

Unrealised potential
I ought to have loved this game. It is the type I go for and after putting it in, I was soon happily slicing my way through hordes of troops.I was impressed by the way each level was cleverly split into a non-linear series of stages. The landscape is broken into regions by natural barriers, e.g. mountains, trees, etc. and military fortifications; to win each level you must assist your troops getting from region to region via gateways - some gates must be sealed to prevent a constant influx of enemy troops whilst others opened to allow your own through. This initial interest soon wore thin. The game truly has nowhere to go. Each successive level provides the unoriginal delights of a new terrain (but not a different "feel") and slightly harder baddies. Boredom soon sets in. If only the levels had required different tactics - the different landscapes requiring stealthy or bold strategies, different opponents responding best to group or individual attacks - but alas this was not to be. You just plow on using the same method and getting the same results. All this is a pity as the graphics are impressive and the players interact well (the engine has good collisions). Much of the problem lies in that you wade through endless numbers (I was averaging over 300 kills a level) of the same type of guy, give or take a few ranks. You don't get the level of involvement with either the story or your foes as you did in say "Tenchu" and that was hardly the paragon of computer entertainment.People have commented on the limited repetoire of techniques. The problem I found was not the limitations of attack but of defence. You can take life in a 360 degree arc but protect your own justfrom those directly in front of you. When you are in the midst of battle it is very difficult to tell who is hitting you, let alone face them. I spent a considerable amount of time having to jump out of the melee, run off, turn around and then comeback so I faced my aggressor. Maybe this adds to the realism but if they wanted reality why was I the only one in my army doing any work?I share my PS2 with my brother and I soon found that this game does not appreciate two people playing it. The messy saving system allows only one person to save mid-level (considering the size of the levels, this is a major hindrance) and it only allows one history per character, so if your bro chooses the same guy as you are playing your hard work is going to be wiped (grrrrr!).All in all, it should have been better than it was and I should have liked it more than I did. Perhaps Dynasty Warriors 3 will provide the variety and involvement this genre demands.
