"The 'Greatest Live Album Ever Made' & It's Numerous Permutations......"
LIVE AT THE APOLLO (originally KING K-826) was released May 1963. Originally only 5000 copies of the album were pressed, 4500 in mono (black label) and 500 in stereo (blue label). While the album was an actual live recording, King Records honcho Syd Nathan, who had no faith in the project whatsoever (more on that later), had additional applause and crowd reaction dubbed, hoping to make the album more exciting to listeners. He needn't have bothered, LIVE AT THE APOLLO was a smash hit, reaching a lofty #2 on the album charts and would remain on them for 66 weeks as well. The album was also released in England and Canada, and later in Spain (1964) and Sweden (1966). In 1980 it was reissued by Solid Smoke , making it available to a whole new generation of listeners. Reissues soon followed in England, France, Canada and Germany, and in 1990 it was made available on CD for the first time . A Mobile Fidelity gold disc version appeared in 1993, and in 2004 it was reissued by Polydor with a new mastering, containing bonus single tracks that were later lifted from the album. At some point it was issued in Japan in mini-cardboard replica sleeve. A straight reissue on vinyl was made available again in 2008. The latest is a 2015 Limited Edition from Japan of the original album sans bonus tracks......As the story goes, James Brown, who had a few hits under his belt, felt that his popular live show would translate on record and bring him more fans, but couldn't convince King Records label boss Syd Nathan to record and release one on album. So on his own dollar he booked a crew to record the last night of a run of shows he was scheduled to play at Harlem's fabled Apollo Theater. Brown felt that it was the perfect venue, having already broken attendance records there. Oh to have been there! The opening acts were The Valentinos (the Wommack brothers of "It's All Over Now" fame), soul shouter Solomon Burke, Texas guitar legend Freddie King and comedian Pigmeat "Here Come The Judge" Markham. Even in the frigid October weather the line to get in stretched two blocks. Listening to the recording now it's obvious that the Apollo audience and James Brown became a mutual admiration society that night, the band is tight as a drum yet can stop on a dime, and Brown's banter with the crowd is as easy as one between old friends. James gives his all and the audience gives it back in spades, Brown's bet paid off in life-long fans as well as dollars. The album became so popular that DJ's would play selected cuts throughout the day and then the whole album in the evening, often several times in a row. But the most important thing was that James Brown had arrived! Soon the hits started coming...and coming, "Out Of Sight," "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," I Feel Good (I Got You)," "It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World" and on and on......So is LIVE AT THE APOLLO the greatest live album ever made? No one can decide that except themselves, but it can't be argued that Brown hit on something that's popular to this day. Whether for the good or the bad, without LIVE AT THE APOLLO there might not have been a GET YER YA-YA's OUT! or LIVE AT LEEDS or FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE, for that matter. In my personal opinion I'd have to give the nod to LIVE AT THE APOLLO, VOL. 2, not only is there more variety to the set list, the double album gives us the bigger picture, especially on the 2CD Deluxe Edition . Brown would later release a third volume ( REVOLUTION OF THE MIND ) and a 1995 recording at the then remodeled and resurrected venue. A BEST OF LIVE AT THE APOLLO: 50th ANNIVERSARY CD also contains tracks from an aborted 1972 album. James Brown may be gone, but the stunning breadth of his recorded legacy will always live on......Here's the Track Listing for the original LP, the first CD issue and the later expanded CD issue:ORIGINAL LP:SIDE ONE:1.
