desertcart.com: The Essential Frank Sinatra (The Columbia Years): CDs & Vinyl Review: Classic Recordings for Any Sinatra Fan - I specifically bought this CD for one song in particular, "Oh What It Seemed to Be".....a personal and heart-warming song that takes me back to the early days with my late wife. But the more I listen to this era in Sinatra's career, the more I begin to appreciate his smooth style of singing, which I adore. Review: Frank without the reverb - This is a superb collection of songs from when Sinatra recorded for Columbia. Best of all, they are presented here in their original sound with none of the reverb and echo many engineers added to them later on. If you like Frank Sinatra this is for you. Frank and what he sounded like then.

Sinatra's Columbia days
I wanted an affordable collection of some of Sinatra's most popular songs from his nine years at Columbia (1943-1952) and this fit the bill.

Among the best recordings in the best sound of Sinatra's Columbia years.
Wow! This is a bargain CD of fantastic tranfers from 78s of early Sinatra. These recordings are marvelous.

Alternate versions are still fine, but not "Essential"
Yet another Columbia compilation, albeit with sterling remastered sound. The twist here is that nearly all of these tracks are alternate versions instead of the familiar versions, all of which were substantial hits. There isn't a hair's breadth of difference, though, between the officially-released versions and these alternates, and in most cases the better version, however subtly so, was indeed the one chosen for contemporary release. This makes for a less-than-essential collection, despite the title and however great the performances and the material. For Sinatraphiles : 4 stars. For everyone else : 5 stars.
